Moana: The Series will hit Disney+ in 2023. Moana initially premiered in 2016. The film starred Auli'i Cravalho, who was just 16 years old when the film was released, as Moana. In the film, Moana was determined to explore the world beyond her native island. However, her parents wanted her to stay behind to become the future leader of their island and avoid the peril that lied beyond. After hearing about the curse put on her island, Moana went on a journey to save it. After teaming up with demi-god Maui (Dwayne Johnson), she was able to lift the curse. Moana became an instant hit thanks to its moving storyline and catchy music composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Ever since the success of Moana, fans have been hopeful for a Moana 2. While a sequel has yet to be confirmed, it's not out of the realm of possibilities. Frozen was another major hit and it received its sequel six years later in 2019. If that's the case for Moana, fans would be able to look forward to Moana 2 in 2022. However, since it hasn't been confirmed yet, if it happens, it likely won't be that soon.
During their Investor Day 2020, Disney confirmed on Twitter that Moana will receive a TV series on its streaming service Disney+. While it is an exciting update, fans will have to be patient as Moana: The Series isn't set to air until 2023. It is unclear whether any of the original cast members will return to reprise their roles, but it's likely if Disney has given a green light to the series. Moana is one of Disney's four animated movies that is getting a TV series along side Big Hero Six with its series Baymax!, Zootopia and Princess and the Frog with Tiana.
Moana: The Series likely means that Moana 2 won't be happening anytime soon (though, it's possible a feature film sequel still happens). However, Moana: The Series might be a more exciting installment for fans. A series could really delve into the lives of not only Moana but the lovable sidekicks like Pua, Maui, and Hei Hei. Additionally, the creators can explore the fictional, Polynesian island Montunui and all the possibilities it has to offer. Additionally, watching young Moana as chief of her island would certainly be an inspiring watch for young girls.
Nostalgic Disney fans have plenty to look forward to. Disney's lineup is packed with sequels and remakes of its most successful films. Additionally, fans have new films to look forward to including a new movie musical from Moana composer Miranda titled Encanto. It is refreshing to see so much upcoming content after Hollywood was put on pause for so long. It may seem like a long ways away, but Moana: The Series will come in 2023 before fans know it.
