It feels like Full Gear will be a crossroads moment for AEW, and MJF recently spoke his mind about what he thinks the company needs to succeed. The September 19 pay-per-view will feature a match between Jon Moxley and The Salt Of The Earth in the main event, with the AEW World Championship on the line. The build towards that bout has been interesting, with MJF seemingly getting turned face via an attack by The Firm. It's unclear how everything will play out once the show rolls around, but the importance isn't lost on Friedman.Taking to Twitter via his @The_MJF handle, he wrote the following ahead of the November 16 episode of Wednesday Night Dynamite: "There's been a shadow casted over AEW by a bunch of f***ing bullshit. We are closer then ever to stepping out of the darkness and into the light. We have the roster. We have the platform. Now all we need is stability, change, and leadership. We need the Devil. I'm ready." [sic] Since returning at All Out, MJF has taken to calling himself The Devil and his fans Devil worshipers. This is interesting because, again, he was seemingly turned face a few weeks ago.
MJF Continues To Blur The Lines Between Reality & Wrestling In AEW
Sometimes with MJF, fans have to read between the lines to figure out what he means. That isn't the case with these comments, as he's clearly touching on the events that followed the All Out pay-per-view. The story on that night should have been about Friedman returning after months to challenge CM Punk for the World Championship. The Voice of the Voiceless had other plans, though. During the media scrum following the pay-per-view, Punk set fire to AEW to the point where he may never be welcomed back. His incendiary comments allegedly led to a backstage altercation with Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks, and no one involved has been seen inside an Elite Wrestling ring since September 4.
MJF isn't wrong about the feeling that AEW is close to emerging from that shadow. Since they haven't been there, there's been a shift from Being the Elite as backstage leaders. Chris Jericho, Bryan Danielson, and Moxley have reportedly stepped into those roles, and morale has improved. Omega and The Young Bucks appear to have something going on at Full Gear, but the AEW they're returning to isn't the same one they left. It'll be interesting to see if Tony Khan finally gives the ball to MJF to see how far he can take it. Moxley is the known commodity as a champion, but the time for a change might be here, as MJF alluded to on Twitter.
