Phil Lord and Christopher Miller's Connected movie gets a new title and a Netflix release. The latest animated comedy from the producing team that created Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse concerns a normal family on a roadtrip who find themselves smack dab in the middle of the robot apocalypse. The first trailer for Connected dropped way back in March, but thanks to COVID the film never received its planned 2020 release.

Now Netflix announces that it has acquired worldwide rights to Lord and Miller’s animated robot apocalypse movie, though in typical Netflix fashion, no release date has been announced. The movie has also received a new title and is now called The Mitchells vs. The Machines. Upon the announcement Lord and Miller expressed their gratitude to Netflix for picking up the movie and also quipped “We’re really proud of the film we all made together, plus we understand our subscription fees are waived in perpetuity as part of the deal? We’re not lawyers but it does sound right to us.”

Netflix of course has become a major player when it comes to feature film releases, recently announcing a huge 2021 slate that will see the streamer putting out more than one movie a week, with major films like Dwayne Johnson’s Red Notice, Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead and Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence's Don’t Look Up headlining the list. And the biggest advantage to Netflix having this huge slate of movies, now including Lord and Miller's robot apocalypse film? There will be plenty of entertainment options throughout 2021 with no worries about dealing with theaters during the ongoing COVID pandemic.

Abbi Jacobson stars in Connected

The voice cast for Lord and Miller’s The Mitchells vs. The Machines (formerly Connected) features Danny McBride, Abbi Jacobson, Maya Rudolph, Mike Rianda, Eric Andre, Olivia Colman, Blake Griffin and Doug The Pug.
