Will E.L. James' The Mister Be Made Into A Film?

The Mister Book Cover

Here's everything we know about the possibility of The Mister becoming a movie. Author E.L. James hit the big time in 2011 when her first book, 50 Shades of Grey, became an international bestseller. Evolved from her own Twilight fan-fiction, James went on to create a series of erotic novels following the relationship between Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey.

While the five 50 Shades books (the core trilogy and retellings from Christian's perspective) are wildly popular, most notably because of their racy content, critical reception towards the novels has been lukewarm, at best. Regardless, Universal snapped up the movie rights, and 50 Shades of Grey, starring Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson, was released in 2015. Just like the source material, 50 Shades of Grey was popular at the box office, but fared less well with the critics.

James has now published a new novel, The Mister, which focuses on British aristocrat Maxim Trevelyan and his relationship with his Albanian sex-trafficked cleaner, Alessia. As is the norm for James' work, there's plenty of sex, and The Mister's central characters are as predictably manly (Maxim) and daintily feminine (Alessia) as one would expect. Per reviews, high brow literature this is not, but that won't stop the masses sending this novel to the top of bestseller charts around the world. With the imminent success of The Mister in mind, how long before the movie hits our screens?

It's not really a question of if The Mister will become a movie, and more a question of when. Since the 50 Shades series proved to be so bankable, James' latest making its way to the screen is inevitable: 50 Shades of Grey pulled in $571 million at the global box office, and while the two subsequent movies didn't hit such heights (making $381 and $371 million, respectively), there's still a sizable audience out there ready to watch anything by James that can be deemed as slightly risque. While critical reception to 50 Shades of Grey was not good, most agreed that despite the pacing, acting, and direction, the resulting movie was still an improvement on the book, and the same could end up true for The Mister.

Of course, presently, there's no official word on The Mister film.

When Could The Mister Movie Release?

If, or when, The Mister movie is made, there's also the question of when it might arrive. If it all goes as most people expect, then studios will be keen to nab the rights as soon as possible.

This is different to how the 50 Shades of Grey movie came about. Back in 2011, no one was expecting the 50 Shades series, which started out as a self-published work, to take off like it did. Its success resulted in a scrambled bidding war for the movie rights, which weren't secured by Universal until 2013, and it took a further two years for the movie to make it to our screens. This time around, it could well be that studios are already in negotiations, and provided the book performs well, as most predict it will, then The Mister movie could start moving ahead fairly quickly.

As a result, we could potentially see The Mister movie playing in theaters as soon as late 2021 or early 2022. Of course, if The Mister performs badly in book form, then the movie version may never arrive, and fans of James' work may only have the 50 Shades trilogy to fall back on.
