Henry Cavill reveals that filming one particular sequence from the climax of Mission: Impossible – Fallout is the hardest thing he's done in his acting career. Released in 2018, Mission: Impossible – Fallout is the sixth film in the cinematic franchise overall, which began in 1996. The movie is directed by Christopher McQuarrie and follows superspy Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) as he attempts to stop a terrorist known as John Lark from detonating a nuclear weapon. The film brings back Mission: Impossible characters like Simon Pegg's Benji, Rebecca Ferguson's Ilsa, Ving Rhames Luther, and Sean Harris' Solomon Lane, in addition to introducing several new ones.

Among the newcomers in Mission: Impossible – Fallout is Cavill as August Walker, a brash but lethal CIA assassin who at first appears to be on Hunt's side when it comes to catching Lark and securing the nuclear weapons. In a shocking reveal, however, Walker turns out to be the real Lark, setting him on a collision course with Hunt. After a number of close shaves, Hunt and Lark finally face off in the film's third act, which takes place in the region of Kashmir. Mission: Impossible – Fallout ends with Lark dead following an intense helicopter chase, and Hunt and his team having successfully stopped the nuclear detonation with only seconds to spare.

In a recent interview with Collider, Cavill reveals that filming the helicopter scenes in Mission: Impossible – Fallout's climax is the hardest thing he's done in his career. The actor explains that, in classic Mission: Impossible franchise tradition, the sequence was filmed mostly practically, with the frigid winter temperatures making life exceptionally unpleasant while flying with the doors open in a helicopter. Although it was a trying sequence to film, Cavill clearly has no regrets. Check out Cavill's full comment below:

“[E]ven though it's not a single shot, it's a sequence, and I love this sequence and I would do it again in a heartbeat, but physically the most enduring […] was a ‘Mission: Impossible’ helicopter sequence. It was so extremely cold, literally above the Southern Alps in winter, with the doors open on a helicopter. I'm sticking my face into the wind and firing blanks, with all sorts of stuff flying back at me, and just doing it over, and over, and over again. Completely deaf, just waiting for the pilot to scream something inaudible and do this [gesture], which meant we are rolling. So I had to then just keep on acting with my head out the window until I assumed that they had stopped shooting. So I was watching either Tom [Cruise]'s helicopter in front or behind, and watching the camera ship as well, to see when the camera ship pulled away and did its own thing. I was like, "Okay, I think that means I can sit back in now." I'll do that for 40 minutes, then land, and then sit by a little Red Rad heater, warm my hands up. Within a half an hour they're like, "Right, we're refueled. Let's go again." It was just having to suck it up and do that for at least two weeks. That was rough, but I absolutely loved the sequence, and it was so worth it.“

Could Henry Cavill Return In The Mission: Impossible Franchise?

Henry Cavill Mission Impossible Fallout

While Cavill's character very clearly dies during Mission: Impossible – Fallout's final moments when he takes a hook to the face and falls off a cliff, the spy technology in the franchise means that fans may not have seen the last of Lark just yet. Now a staple of the Mission: Impossible franchise, characters like Hunt can craft highly-realistic masks to assume the identity of just about anyone. It remains to be seen what Cruise has in store for audiences with the final two installments in the Mission: Impossible franchise, but it's certainly possible that Cavill could return to play a different character who is assuming Lark's identity.

The Mission: Impossible franchise has featured a number of standout villains over the last 25 years, but Cavill's character in Mission: Impossible – Fallout is one of the most memorable. Not only is the character cunning with a clear goal, but Cavill's physicality makes Lark even more of a threat, with Cruise's Hunt appearing physically outmatched for one of the first times in the franchise. Mission: Impossible – Fallout is arguably one of the best movies in the franchise and Cruise and McQuarrie evidently have their work cut out for them when it comes to crafting an even more formidable villain than Cavill's Lark.
