Recent photos from the set of Mission: Impossible 7 show Tom Cruise filming a car stunt in Rome, Italy with his co-star Hayley Atwell. The seventh installation of the Mission: Impossible series has been one of Hollywood’s largest productions to resume filming early on during the pandemic. Filming had been initially delayed COVID-19 spread across Italy, where they were based in March. The movie currently sees a November 2021 release date.

While production was momentarily disrupted by the pandemic, the team was quick to react as they drafted a new, albeit turbulent, filming schedule. The cast and crew have since filmed in a number of European locations in the past several months, from the United Kingdom to Norway and now to Italy. The team did face a few hiccups from law enforcement during Norway’s quarantine period and 12 people on set reportedly testing positive for COVID-19 back in October, but Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie, along with health chiefs conducting contact tracing, engaged in crisis talks to address the matter and facilitate safer filming procedures.

In recent photos from set in Rome (via Daily Mail), Cruise and co-star Atwell appear cuffed to a steering wheel of a black car with the doors detached, making room for the cameras. A larger camera is mounted to the top of the black vehicle, likely for a car chase scene, an iconic component of Mission: Impossible movies. The latest photos reveal the car chase happening near the Victor Emmanuel II Monument, and they have already filmed in a number of iconic Italian landmarks. Cruise was also seen in another car, a vintage yellow Fiat 500, as he prepared for what appears to be a stand-off scene against police cars.

The team does seem cautious of the pandemic throughout filming, as the crew wears protective gear during shoots and the cast between takes. In all the set photos circulating online, Cruise is seen wearing two face masks -- a black face one over a surgical one -- as he interacted with co-stars and crew and waved to fans. He and McQuarrie further urged fans to remain socially distanced from one another as they waited by set, attempting to strike a fair balance between greeting their supporters safely and not encouraging large gatherings.

While COVID-19 has slowed production for many big projects, Mission: Impossible 7 has adapted while resuming its European tour that has landed it in the initial epicenter of the virus -- Italy. Cruise has shown that it is still possible to shoot a car chase in the center of Rome, and recently released set photos depict yet another thrillingly dangerous exploit from Ethan Hunt. As the shoot nears completion, fans can anticipate seeing Cruise's iconic Ethan Hunt character again soon.
