Here's Why Mission: Impossible 6 is Titled Fallout

Mission: Impossible 6 director Christopher McQuarrie reveals the multiple meanings behind the film's newly unveiled title Fallout.

Director Christopher McQuarrie have revealed the meaning behind the official title for Mission: Impossible 6, aka. Mission: Impossible - Fallout. That title was itself only just revealed by star Tom Cruise and Paramount Pictures today. Cruise also used his new Instagram account to tease a crazy helicopter stunt from the film, with the first "official" image from Fallout.

Cruise recently returned to the set of the sixth Mission: Impossible movie after breaking his ankle during a stunt leap last August. In typical Cruise fashion, the actor wasted no time getting back to engaging in dangerous on-set activities. Director McQuarrie is promising multiple huge stunt sequences in the film. Storywise, Fallout sees Ethan Hunt toning down the globe-trotting while becoming involved with a new love interest played by Vanessa Kirby. Henry Cavill co-stars along with his now-infamous mustache.

As for that newly-revealed title, director Christopher McQuarrie has explained the thinking behind it. Speaking to Empire, McQuarrie talked about how "Fallout" carries more than one meaning:

“The title has multiple meanings in the film, from the literal to the figurative. There is the threat of nuclear terrorism hanging over the movie, which is the literal threat. There’s [also] the notion that what’s happened in the movie is the end result of choices that Ethan Hunt has made in his life. It’s Ethan’s past come back to haunt him. It’s the fallout of all his good intentions.”

The one-word title represents a break from the two-word title trend established by Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation. McQuarrie says the one-word title decision reflects a "different attitude" for the new movie. "It should be striking its own ground, and that’s what I felt Fallout did," McQuarrie explained. The director also joked about wanting to call the movie The Last Jedi before Star Wars beat them to the punch. What a twist it would be if Tom Cruise turned out to be the real last Jedi!

Much like The Last Jedi, it seems Mission: Impossible - Fallout will mark something of a tonal departure from earlier films in the series. In a previous interview, McQuarrie mentioned that the film will dial back on the "cutesy" tone and feature more emotional drama. That emotional drama presumably will grow from Ethan Hunt's past coming back to haunt him. But what exactly does McQuarrie mean when he talks about the "fallout" from Hunt's prior actions?

We do know that Michelle Monaghan will appear in Fallout as Julia, Ethan's wife whose death he helped fake in Ghost Protocol. Does Julia return to somehow "haunt" Ethan?  Things could get emotionally dramatic if Julia crosses paths with Ethan's new love interest. Or maybe Ethan's actions in Rogue Nation, where he himself went rogue in order to battle the mysterious Syndicate, have repercussions in the new film. Perhaps we'll get more clues with the first trailer, which McQuarrie promises will arrive soon.

Mission: Impossible - Fallout also co-stars Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Angela Bassett, Alec Baldwin, and Sean Harris.
