Zoe Saldana is one of Hollywood’s most sought-after actors, having starred in such franchises as Avatar, Star Trek, and Guardians of the Galaxy. She has previously lent her voice to the animated movies The Book of Life and My Little Pony: The Movie. Her current role is Adelina Fortnight, a free-spirit adventurer, in the animated feature Missing Link.

So, Adelina was by far my favorite character. She's so adventurous and that's something that I wish that I could be too.

Zoe Saldana: Me too.

And in this movie, she's an immigrant and she's also a widow. So, do you think she has something to prove in this movie?

Zoe Saldana: I think she does. And she has something to prove to herself. And it’s that she has what it takes to be independent, to live her own path. And she doesn't quite know that in the beginning when you meet her.

And I think that's an important message, especially for young girls growing up looking at something like that. I just thought she was such a strong character and that resonated with me. Now the other thing that I thought was so interesting about this movie is the entire process. From the voice acting to the little puppets that they use. So, what was your initial reaction when you first saw the completed project?

Zoe Saldana: I'm always beside myself. I always-- I tend to have an out of body experiences with films that I've been in that are like this. That require so much time to make. From Missing Link to Avatar to even [Guardians of the Galaxy]. Once I see the end result, one, I'm so proud to have been a part of it. I feel like, oh my God, I can't believe I'm a part of that. And two, I tend to forget that I was a part of it and I still go along for the journey. So, anyway, I like it.

The adventure behind this movie's trying to find a mythical creature. So, if you could devote your entire life to exploring, to going on adventures to find one mythical creature, which one would you choose to find? Or do you hope that exists?

Zoe Saldana: A unicorn.

Yes! That’s what I was thinking too.

Zoe Saldana: I love unicorns. I love unicorns!

Zoe Saldana in Missing Link

Where would you start off looking for a unicorn first of all? Do you have a concept of where they'd be?

Zoe Saldana: No [LAUGHS].

We're just going to go from one country to the next and be like, is there a unicorn?

Zoe Saldana: I think I would start, I don’t know, in like Ireland or England. I don't know why I thought that's where unicorns would live. Maybe because I saw a movie called Legend when I was a child. And it looked like, from everybody's accent, that it was in England. So, I would start there.

That's a good answer for me. Now, I have to say I am a huge fan of the Avengers. So, with what happened to Gamora on the last one, I cried. I was very upset.

Zoe Saldana: I’m so sorry.

So, I want to know is there any chance that you might see her again?

Zoe Saldana: I don't know.

Am I going to continue to cry?

Zoe Saldana: I hope not. I hope. I hope that she comes back, but I honestly don't know. And also, I can't tell you.

That’s fair. I'll cry in my bedroom when I get home. Now, we have time for a really quick game. Have you ever played Heads Up before?

Zoe Saldana: No.

Okay. So, Heads Up, it's this game where you kind of have to give me clues to the word that's on my phone and then I have to guess what it is. So, it has to do with the movie.

Zoe Saldana: Okay. Oh, a choo-choo!

Train.

Zoe Saldana: Okay, um, uh—

Sasquatch?

Zoe Saldana: He wants to find the…

Yeti!

Zoe Saldana: Yes. Oh, and you know what? They don't fly by plane back in those days. They traveled through…

Boat?

Zoe Saldana: But a bigger one.

Ship?

Zoe Saldana: Yes. Oh, and you know what? It's an elephant that never forgets. He has a big trunk.

Elephant?

Zoe Saldana: Yes.

Laika Missing Link movie characters

[LAUGHS] You said elephant.

Zoe Saldana: You what?

[LAUGHS] You said elephant.

Zoe Saldana: [LAUGHS] Buck-buck-buck-buck.

Chicken!

Zoe Saldana: Ooh, we live in this…

World.

Zoe Saldana: Ahhh, he's so adorable in this movie, and he's a Mister...

Mr. Link.

Zoe Saldana: Oh! Do you know what? The technology that this was done in is--

Stop-motion!

Zoe Saldana: Aw. He's searching for…[BUZZER].

Oh, that was really good.

Zoe Saldana: Not bad. Except for elephant. An elephant never forgets. I can’t believe I did that.

Thanks so much.
