An all-new indie game called Minute of Islands has been revealed during E3 this year, and the game seems to be heavily inspired by the Adventure Time cartoon series. Both the art style and dark themes of Minute of Islands are pleasantly familiar in this visually stunning side scroller, and fans of the TV series can easily see the similarities.

Minute of Islands is the latest game from the independent German games studio located in Ludwigsburg and Berlin, Studio Fizbin. The studio was founded back in 2011, with a strong focus on story-based games and original and unique worlds. Studio Fizbin has released games such as The Inner World, Say No! More and Lost At Sea. This year has been a big one for the studio, with two games being released and a third on the way. Many of these new releases have already won several international awards, with Minute of Islands winning the Official Selection Indie Megabooth Pax East in 2020 and the Official Selection Indie Megabooth Pax West in 2019.

The latest game to be announced for Studio Fizbin is Minute of Islands, a story-driven puzzle platformer that sets out to turn the classic hero’s journey on its head. The game was previewed as a part of the E3 showcase, which was live-streamed around the world. Players will explore strange islands along with the creepy dark labyrinths that lay below. The game revolves around guiding the young mechanic Mo on a quest to repair a world which is on the brink of collapse, fixing vital machines needed to keep everything going. Even with Mo’s brilliant engineering skills and the divine Omni Switch, it won’t be an easy task. The story is told mainly through the illustrations on screen, many of which will remind players of Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time series, with a similar art style and emphasis on a mix of strange and cute creatures.

This isn’t the kind of game that is bursting with action or adventure. The main strength of the game lies in the storytelling, which will only serve to bolster the appeal of the atmosphere, the art style, and the setting as the game goes on. Secrets and mysteries will unveil themselves as players journey across the desolate land, bringing life back to the world as they go.

Indie games have proven themselves time and time again in recent years, especially following the triumphant success of Among Us in 2020. E3 has proven fertile ground for these smaller-scale projects, especially after the recent Devolver Digital showcase, which featured intriguing indie titles like Trek To Yomi. Time will tell if these new titles, Minute of Islands included, can hold their own amongst the greats.
