During tonight's Super Bowl LIV, Illumination Entertainment released the first TV spot for Minions: The Rise of Gru and also revealed that the full trailer for the movie will drop on Wednesday. The upcoming animated film is the sequel to the commercially successful first film, Minions, which debuted in 2015. The Minions films themselves are a spinoff of the Despicable Me franchise, which focuses on the supervillain-turned-dad Gru (Steve Carell), his Minion sidekicks, and his three adopted daughters. There have been three Despicable Me movies so far, with the Minions films taking place before the series.

The first Minions movie revealed the creatures' origin on Earth and focuses on their first villain boss, Scarlet Overkill (Sandra Bullock). They first meet Scarlet at Villain-Con and wind up teaming with her and her husband, Herb (Jon Hamm). However, their relationship eventually goes sour, leaving the Minions in search of a new boss. The end of the film showed the Minions' first interaction with Gru, as he bested the Overkills and fled the scene. The sequel will focus on Gru's journey to becoming a supervillain and his early relationship with the Minions. It will be released this July.

The first footage of Minions: The Rise of Gru teases a fun adventure for the Minions, this time with a young, less polished Gru. The first TV spot for the upcoming film also reveals the first full trailer will debut on Wednesday. Additionally, Illumination shared a new poster for the movie, featuring the appropriate tagline, "Brace Yourself." Check out the first footage and poster for Minions: The Rise of Gru below:

The film's producer, Illumination Entertainment, has become an impressive player in the animated movie game in the last few years. The company has been around since 2007 and maintains control over its own films, while Universal Pictures handles distribution. Illumination established itself with Despicable Me as its very first film. Since then, it's gone on to produce The Lorax, Sing, The Secret Life of Pets and several others. The new Minions trailer shows that they have no desire to slow down any time soon.

The first trailer for Minions: The Rise of Gru doesn't offer any huge surprises, however, it's still fun to see the Minions back in action, especially with Gru. Their relationship with him is a standout of the Despicable Me films, and it looks like it will be a treat to see their early, chaotic time together. Since the first Minions movie mainly focused on the Minions themselves, it will be nice to have another familiar face around for Minions: The Rise of Gru
