One Minecraft player built a working escalator using Redstone, pushing the seemingly endless boundaries in Mojang’s voxel sandbox. Minecraft has become a creative outlet for many, transforming from a survival game into a virtual canvas where players can demonstrate their artistic prowess. From massive construction projects like one Minecraft player’s recreation of Theed City from Star Wars to ingenious feats of engineering, like a player’s functioning graphing calculator, there is a continuous stream of fresh ideas flowing from the virtual sandbox. And despite the long life of the beloved game, new inventions are consistently being brought to light.

What gives Minecraft its seemingly limitless possibilities is the massive scope of its usable entities. The game features hundreds of building blocks to choose from, as well as Redstone mechanisms that add another layer of complexity. Redstone provides ample opportunity to be creative within the game, allowing players to create feats of engineering like a self-assembling railroad using Redstone or a recreation of Google’s internet outage minigame. Redstone transmits power, which can be used to activate pistons, Redstone lamps, dispensers, and other useful tools. Redstone contraptions can be simple, like powering rails to move a minecart, but they are often taken to dizzying levels of complexity, bringing technological innovation to Minecraft.

Reddit user Intelligent_Rent4594 demonstrated that technological innovation with their working escalator in Minecraft, using Redstone as a power source. The build looks and acts like a real-life escalator, moving stairs up to the top and then recycling them by pushing them back to the bottom like a conveyor belt. The working escalator utilizes Redstone, repeaters, and pistons to consistently and automatically move the platform blocks up the ramp and back down. The blocks continuously recycle, meaning a player could, in theory, leave the escalator on, traversing floors without having to take a step.

The working escalator – much like a recent working Minecraft elevator mod - is not only an impressive build but a functional one, too. Being able to traverse multiple stories automatically could be useful in a survival world, such as when a player needs to get to the top of their survival base with ease. And while ladders can essentially achieve the same goal, a working escalator adds a certain flair not present with the traditional method. It’s not clear if Intelligent_Rent4594’s Redstone escalator design can be extended higher than this build was, but it seems likely that repeating the Redstone circuitry could accomplish that goal.

Minecraft builds continue to impress, especially when Redstone is involved. From fully-functional computers to dancing sand art that uses Redstone and slime, there is no end to what Minecraft players will accomplish. And Intelligent_Rent4594’s escalator project proves that tinkering in Minecraft can yield stunning results.
