An online Minecraft tournament, based on the Netflix series Squid Game, has led to a cyber attack against the small European microstate of Andorra. Releasing on Netflix in September 2021, the beloved South Korean drama sees a group of players fight to survive deadly children's games in order to win a massive cash prize. A Minecraft recreation of Squid Game, held as a Twitch Rivals tournament, helped simulate the series' deadly games with participants from all around the world.

Squid Game stars Lee Jung-jae as Seong Gi-hun, a gambling addict who struggles to provide for his daughter. Invited to participate in the game, Gi-hun encounters many allies and enemies as he fights to survive the grotesque challenges and walk away as a rich man. Squid Game gives deadly twists to popular children's games like Red Light, Green Light and marbles, and this bizarre combination of elements has motivated many gamers to recreate the competition. Minecraft's wide variety of resources makes it a natural platform to reenact the Netflix series, and a fan-made Squid Game minigame in Animal Crossing gives the Nintendo title's furry villagers a chance to compete as well.

As reported by Rock Paper Shotgun, a recent Minecraft Twitch Rivals tournament based on Squid Game led to most of Andorra being knocked offline. Called SquidCraft Games, the competition used a Minecraft mod to recreate Squid Games' deadly activities for an international playerbase. However, a cyber attack targeted select players from Andorra, hoping to take them out of the tournament, and the European principality's small size meant that the attack took out the entire nation's internet. Andorran streamers Auron and Rubius have now offered a substantial bounty to find those responsible.

Twitch Rivals SquidCraft Games

The idea of a Squid Game video game is extremely enticing, with many creators trying to bring the series to a digital format. While the Twitch Rivals SquidCraft Games were ruined by hackers, a real playable Squid Game video game was built by an independent developer back in November 2021. The multiplayer survival game allows gamers to compete in the Red Light, Green Light and Glass Stepping Stones games, with other deadly activities reportedly in development. The Squid Game project was constructed by developer Farwhal and distributed on the platform itch.io.

A Twitch Rivals tournament within Minecraft seems like a perfect way to recreate the intensity of Squid Game, but hackers unfortunately ruined the experience. The citizens of Andorra were also unfortunately affected by the cyber attack, meaning the childish act could have had very serious consequences. Streamers Auron and Rubius have begun a search for the perpetrators, but time will tell whether the Squid Game hackers ever actually answer for the Twitch Rivals cyber attack.
