One industrious and creative Minecraft player has put their building prowess to good use by recreating the adorable sprites for some of the original Pokémon. This is hardly the first time that these two massively popular franchises have collided. Minecraft players have been rebuilding iconic Pokémon locations for quite some time now, as the open-world game of Minecraft provides endless materials and space to bring these previously 2D settings to glorious 3D.

Minecraft has become known more and more for the seemingly infinite number of creations its players can imagine, design, and build. From complicated Redstone contraptions to full cities within the game, Minecraft players across the world have shared their creations with captive audiences as fellow players marvel. Many players will use mods to help craft their creations, while others will use the creative mode. Still, more daring players will attempt their Minecraft builds in survival mode, battling enemies like Creepers, skeletons, spiders, and zombies who can threaten to destroy all the player's hard work. Although this build appears to have been done in the peaceful creative mode, it is nonetheless quite impressive.

Shared on Reddit by user GaggleofGeckos, the player has build floating statues resembling the first 26 Pokémon in the Pokédex. From Bulbasaur through Raichu, all the Pokémon are shown in incredible detail. Of course, the video angle and perspective are used to frame all the models makes it unclear just how big (or small) these creations are, but given the amount of detail and how blocky and unwieldy Minecraft blocks can be, the builds must be quite big.

These sprites are undoubtedly taken from the Pokémon Fire Red/Leaf Green versions, which were remakes of the original Pokémon Red and Blue. Released in 2004, Fire Red and Leaf Green were praised for the additional detail and content they added to the original games. Whereas the original Pokémon sprites were colorless and blocky, Fire Red and Leaf Green gave those same sprites life thanks to their release on the GameBoy Advance. It must have taken GaggleofGeckos a number of different color blocks - perhaps variants of concrete, wool, or Sandstone - to create all of these sprites, an incredible accomplishment.

The vast array of flora and fauna in Minecraft has lent itself to many comparisons to Pokémon. One creative modder built a modpack called Pixelmon, which re-skinned many of the Minecraft creatures to resemble Pokémon. Players can even "catch" Pokémon in their Minecraft world. So seeing a player take the time and effort to create massive Pokémon sprites in-game is unsurprising, but delightful all the same.
