One Minecraft user’s Nether portal optical illusion is brilliant, making it look like the Overworld without the use of mods. The 3D voxel sandbox-turned phenomenon continues to be the home of impressive projects, as massive builds, innovative constructs, and stunning recreations repeatedly pop up over the internet. A Minecraft player recently recreated a medieval house inspired by New World. As is with many projects in Minecraft, the player utilized the expansive sandbox elements to capture the image and iconic art of Amazon Games’ new MMORPG.

Mojang’s sandbox seems to draw people in with more than its design elements, but with its innovative build system that makes the impossible, plausible. Minecraft players have crafted, built, and finished projects that utilize these functions, such as a playable chess game using item frames or a flying machine in Minecraft. Most of the projects exceed the scope of the survival sandbox game, expanding the nature of the game’s main objective, which is to craft, survive, and eventually defeat the Ender Dragon. Some Minecraft builds, like the Ender Pearl Stasis Chamber, help make those goals easier. While others, like a recreation of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace’s Theed City, serve to reflect a player’s imagination.

Reddit user Glynnc posted a video of their Nether portal optical illusion build in Minecraft. From one angle, the inside of the Nether portal appears to show off the Overworld, though the Obsidian frame has not been lit. When the camera pans out, however, the optical illusion is uncovered. Glynnc used an ample amount of glow stone and stained blocks to make it look like the Overworld in the Nether.

From an external angle, the build looks crude, however, like many optical illusions, the right angle seals the deal. The Overworld is resting within the Obsidian frame, making it seem as though the Nether portal is revealing the alternate dimension. The build was achieved without the use of mods. The Immersive Portals Mod does something similar, allowing players to see through portals. The mod also allows players to go through those portals without the loading screen. Glynnc’s build, however, was done in Vanilla Minecraft. The player used stained blocks to mimic water in the Nether and added enough glow stone to lighten up the blocks as though it were the Overworld.

As with many Minecraft creations, Glynnc’s optical illusion build is an innovative expansion of the game’s Vanilla concept. The project expands the scope of Minecraft’s survival sandbox elements, pushing the envelope on what’s possible within Mojang’s 3D voxel world. Some players have achieved something similar, like a Minecraft glass mirror effect optical illusion that makes a massive cavern look infinite. Glynnc admitted that this isn’t the end for them and that they will continue to experiment with optical illusions in Minecraft.
