Mojang Studios will soon be releasing their new action strategy game, Minecraft Legends which takes place within the familiar world of Minecraft, but whether it is canon could be up for a bit of debate. The Minecraft franchise has been growing and evolving by taking the cubic blocks of Minecraft and using them to create dungeon crawlers like Minecraft Dungeons and explore DLC within Batman or SpongeBob SquarePants worlds. These varied stories are often fun, but some players wonder how much of the Minecraft universe actually gets put into one cohesive story.

Whether canon or not, Minecraft Legends will be released in just a couple of weeks. It will provide players with a strategy adventure that includes a narrative campaign mode as well as offering a separate PvP experience. The campaign takes characters through an epic tale of war against the piglins, guided by celestial Hosts who were the original creators of the world. The player's character has the unique opportunity as the champion of these Hosts to defeat the piglins and restore peace to the Overworld.

Minecraft Legends Is Not Canon, Rather It Is Truly A Legend In The Minecraft Universe

Minecraft Legends was named very deliberately because the story that takes place within the campaign is supposedly a retelling of a legend that has been passed down throughout the generations in the villages of Minecraft. Rather than canon, it is a folktale of sorts that may or may not have actually happened. Before the piglins invaded, the Overworld was at total peace. Zombies and Villagers could live in harmony, and even the cats and Creepers could interact without explosions. The Hosts were somewhat godlike beings that oversaw the creation of the universe. Then, the piglins invaded, and a Champion arose, selected by the Hosts themselves and given magical tools. The narrative is essentially a Minecraft version of mythology that players get to experience first-hand in Minecraft Legends.

The True Legends Of Minecraft Come From The Players

The whole idea of canon within Minecraft is a bit of a fluid concept. In a recent preview of Minecraft Legends, Executive Producer of Mojang Studios, Dennis Ries, answered a question regarding the story of Minecraft Legends and how the team goes about telling stories in the Minecraft universe.

"We believe that the real stories of Minecraft exist within our players, like everyone has their own Minecraft story and what we wanted to make sure we did, is that we preserve those stories because those are far more important" - Dennis Ries, Executive Producer of Mojang Studios

As a whole, Minecraft has always been about creativity, expression, and fostering imaginative adventures told by its players. Therefore, it makes sense that Mojang Studios would look at the stories that are told as Legends. Every person can create their own legend within Minecraft, and narratives in games such as Minecraft Legends are simply a fun folktale experience that players can enjoy playing.

Minecraft Legends may or may not be canon depending on how a person thinks about it. Technically, no, it is not a truly canonical experience in Minecraft, however, the folktale of it could be considered as a part of the overarching universe that has existed for generations. Either way that a player wants to view it, the stories told in Minecraft's universe are all Legends, whether put out by Mojang Studios or created by a child in their own server.
