A Minecraft player posted a video showcasing a portrait they made of the game's protagonist, Steve, made entirely out of falling sand. The sandbox video game is filled with ways to build elaborate creations like this picture, even to the extent that some Minecraft mods are better than official game updates.

Falling sand art in Minecraft involves crafting a desired image or shape by balancing blocks of sand on top of elevated torches. The in-game art form can yield pixelated depictions of any desired image, as long as creators don't mind spending a lot of time building their design. Some players will take long periods of time to make detailed and large-scale builds, such as one Minecraft creator's 200-block-diameter ocean base, which took six months to make. All of these creations are considerable accomplishments, in part due to the extensive work required to make them.

Falling sand art is slightly different from other elaborately constructed pieces in Minecraft, though, and Reddit user KevinJNguy01's massive Steve graphic demonstrates why. After piling blocks of sand on top of torches that reached past 1000 blocks into the sky, the creator's video shows them removing the bottommost torch and purposefully causing the whole structure to collapse onto the ground below. Having used so many blocks of sand falling from such great heights, the entire fall lasted almost a full minute, with the footage sped up, before assembling into a colossal, colorful portrait of Steve sitting in an open field. As a result, the very destruction of the build gives way to its final product.

The user didn't reveal too much about the process behind making this grand art piece, but they did answer a few questions left by commenters on their post. In a response to someone inquiring about their approach to the project, KevinJNguy01 mentioned they "had [the sand] start from the side and go in branches to create less lag since there were less entities falling at once." Other reddit users noticed some blocks of sand reached heights that exceeded Minecraft's limits, prompting KevinJNguy01 to clarify that they used a data pack implemented by Minecraft developer Mojang Studios to modify the height restrictions. Without exceeding the height limits, the graphic might not have been able to reach such an enormous scale.

The Minecraft creator didn't mention how long the piece took, but the final product does boast an impressive level of scale and detail. It's difficult to cut corners in Minecraft when creating in-game builds that require meticulous design and a lots of materials, and falling sand art is not exempt from this fact. For this very reason, though, finishing big projects like this portrait of Steve is undoubtedly an accomplishment that all Minecraft fans can enjoy.
