Minecraft Dungeons' latest DLC, Creeping Winter, is available now, and it's accompanied by a free update for all players. The release of the Creeping Winter DLC and the free update was announced last month in a post that also revealed new types of Merchants coming to the game.

Mojang announced Minecraft Dungeons back in 2018, and after a few delays, the game released in May 2020. It combines Minecraft's popular block aesthetics with roguelike gameplay elements. Players explore different worlds by themselves or with a team, discovering dungeons full of new weapons that they then use against random mob attacks.

The Creeping Winter DLC was released yesterday, and Mojang published detailed patch notes for the update. The DLC features a new world for players to explore, with three new missions full of new enemies and weapons. In addition, the update also introduces Daily Trials. These are missions that will change every day, and they will challenge players to experiment in the game in order to be rewarded with exclusive Daily Trials gear. The patch notes conclude with information about general bug fixes and gameplay improvements, including graphics and audio updates.

The original Minecraft has kept its popularity high since its 2009 release, and any associated game is likely to get a boost from its reputation. After its release in May, Minecraft Dungeons exceeded expectations. Just two weeks after release, it was the best-selling game on the Nintendo Switch, out-selling even Animal Crossing: New Horizons. There have already been two DLC updates to the game, and both have been met with praise for their unique missions and additions to the overall gameplay. Creeping Winter is sure to give players even more reason to praise and play Minecraft Dungeons, especially with the addition of Daily Trials.

Though Minecraft Dungeons breaks from the original Minecraft concept in that it does not give players the creative freedom to literally build out their own worlds, it still stays true to Minecraft's sense of adventure and exploration. Minecraft Dungeons is a structured game in its missions and dungeon layouts, but it still encourages players to go off course and discover more about the worlds that have been created for them, rewarding them with gear and loot that will allow them to continue on in the dungeon and therefore explore even more. The addition of DLC like Creeping Winter means that Mojang is creating opportunities for players to keep that sense of adventure going, and providing new areas for them to meticulously comb through and discover more and more. With its success so far, it could be interesting to see if Minecraft Dungeons can remain popular as long as the original Minecraft.
