A devoted Minecraft fan made an unlikely discovery, finding out that the original Creeper’s texture was actually based on the regular texture of a leaf block. This is probably one of the best concealed Easter eggs in the game, although it's far from the only surprising discovery that's been made in the beloved game.

One inquisitive Minecraft player presented evidence that the game’s End crystal hides a secret that’s been hidden in plain sight for years now. According to the gamer, the symbols on the crystal’s six sides form the word Mojang, the name of the studio behind the immensely popular sandbox title. Not only that but the letter “O” is designed in a way to represent the studio’s old logo, which was changed last May.

As shared by dead_5775 on Minecraft’s Subreddit, the original Creeper texture was just a block of leaves reused to create a new mob with an added face to it. This assumption has been confirmed by superimposing the mob’s texture over the leaves’ one. According to the player, both of them were extracted from the legacy version of Minecraft Java Edition, more specifically 0.24_SURVIVAL_TEST_03. The discovery fits into the mythos of the Creepers’ infamous origin story. It’s common knowledge that this mob owes its existence to a mistake made by Notch, who accidentally swapped the axes for a pig’s 3D model. It resulted in a weird abomination with a long body and tiny legs, which was strange enough to inspire the creator of Minecraft to keep it as a unique hostile mob.

This new evidence of the Creepers’ origin in Minecraft most probably implies that these weird creatures were supposed to be living plants, blending into the environment by hiding in the vegetation. One wonders how this interpretation of Creepers can be used to justify a recent mod that makes the iconic monsters blend into their environments. Basically, each major biome of the game has received its own unique version of a Creeper; this includes snow, stone, sand, and numerous other variations. Even the Nether realm was treated to a specific version of the explosive silent assassin.

Before its acquisition by Microsoft, Minecraft was a true indie game. The community has been reminded of this fact by the recently discovered secret of the Creeper skin, which perfectly demonstrates that the popular title was created through trial, error, and easy solutions like constant texture reuse. While Mojang is trying to get rid of such simplifications, having lately changed the legacy ore textures, Minecraft continues to be a decade-old product at its core in almost every aspect. This might actually be another secret, which has kept the game alive for so many years.
