Mojang has just released the Minecraft Caves & Cliffs Update: Part 1, and it's available to download now for all Bedrock and Java players. The major Minecraft update brings new mobs, blocks, and textures to the game, including the axolotl, the goat, and the glow squid mobs. Players can also go mining for copper, amethyst, and dripleaf, as well as craft new gear like the spyglass and lightning rod.

The June 8 Caves & Cliffs update is only the first of two parts of the massive Minecraft update, as it was previously announced that Mojang would divide it into two parts. As Minecraft Java Edition nears its tenth birthday, major changes have arrived in the game across multiple platforms. The first part of the update is focused on new mobs, blocks, and gear, while the latter update, expected to release later in 2021, is focused on significant world generation changes, including a widely anticipated expanded height limit, which will be set at 256 blocks.

According to Mojang, the first part of the Caves & Cliffs update is available now on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android devices - anywhere players can access Minecraft Bedrock or Java Edition. The update includes the underwater axolotl companion, the cute and mischievous goat, and the glow squid, which adds luminous glow ink sacs to the game. The update also brings copper, amethyst, and dripleaf, each coming with its own unique properties and utility. Finally, the update lets players craft spyglasses for scoping out long distances and the lightning rod, a Redstone contraption that activates Redstone when lightning strikes.

The launch of Minecraft's Caves & Cliffs Update: Part 1 is sure to bring excitement, as players rush in to meet the new mobs and other big changes. World seeds are once again ripe for exploration, especially in the depths of the sea with newfound axolotl companions in tow. The cute critter will help players clear Guardian temples and fight underwater mobs, essentially filling the role wolves do on land but underwater. The axolotl has plenty of interesting capabilities, such as playing dead, which are sure to make sea exploration in Minecraft more interesting. The goat mobs are going to make the overworld - especially mountains - quite different, too, as players will have to watch out for headbutts that could push them over the edge and to their doom.

Worlds will also be filled with new ore, blocks, and gems to find, creating expanded Minecraft crafting possibilities for players. With new creative and technical possibilities, such as the lightning rod, Minecraft worlds are a good bit different now, and that trend will continue with the Caves & Cliffs Update: Part 2, which is expected to drop later in 2021.
