A talented Minecraft player recreated the French town of Turchkeim on a one-to-one scale, completing the build after 600 hours. Minecraft’s dedicated fanbase is still very much alive, as evident by the steady stream of impressive projects continuously spawning on the internet. From fantastical recreations like one Minecraft player’s Avengers Tower build to real-world reconstructions like a Mediterranean Island, players are constantly pushing the boundaries in Mojang’s voxel sandbox.

Minecraft’s continued popularity can be attributed to its steady stream of new updates, like the Caves & Cliffs: Part 2 update that dropped at the end of 2021. The long-awaited patch brought a plethora of world generation changes, such as a new height limit, as well as new biomes. The next big update, The Wild, is said to be around the corner, which could bring more biomes and blocks for players to utilize. All of Minecraft’s new features add to what’s possible in the game, giving players more tools to pursue ambitious projects, like the recreation of Genshin Impact’s Teyvat Continent.

Reddit user TytaRex shared their latest Minecraft build, which is a 1:1 scale recreation of Turckheim in Alsace, France. The scale means that one in-game block is equal to one meter (or three feet) in the real world. Given that Turchheim is about 6.36 square miles, there were over 16 million square meters worth of space to reproduce. According to TytaRex, the massive build took 600 hours to complete and utilized the Minecraft à la carte ign map generator, which allows players to generate maps from geographical data. The map generator only spawns buildings as bricks on the ground representing the walls, so TytaRex had to raise the blocks according to each structures’ real-world height. Using Google Street View and Good Earth, TytaRex was able to more accurately finish the outer areas of the French commune.

TytaRex’s 1:1 scale replica of Turchkeim is part of the larger Minecraft Build The Earth Project, which has the ambitious goal of recreating all of the Earth in the voxel world. The project uses the “Terra 1 to 1” mod to spawn the geographic landscape of Earth and has employed thousands of players to help construct hundreds of real-world cities. The project began with YouTuber PippenFTS’s call for builders and his own attempt at recreating a full-scale Seattle. After a couple of years, the project has gained a lot of steam. Players all around the world have helped fill in the rest of Earth’s many structures and civilizations, though there is still a lot of work to be done before it’s complete. The end result will be a true Minecraft Earth all compiled into one map.

In early March, a group of Minecraft players built New York City on a one-to-one scale, including apartment buildings, skyscrapers, and bridges. At that point, there were about 6700 square kilometers, or about 2500 square miles completed, and it was reported that 4500 builds are still in progress. As TytaRex has clearly demonstrated, the Minecraft Built The Earth Project is still in full swing, and fans will likely not rest until the entirety of Earth is constructed.
