Once you've made an enchantment table in Minecraft, you should look at getting some enchantments for your armor and weapons if you have enough levels. Many players prefer to enchant their diamond gear. However, getting some crucial enchantments for your Iron gear is recommended early on.

Depending on where your base is situated, you might need some extra protection from various elements and mobs you might encounter while farming for Diamonds and other resources. For example, if your base is in the mountains and hills biome, you might need to consider getting a Feather Falling enchantment so that you have reduced fall damage. Regardless of when you decide to enchant your gear, there are definitely some enchantments you want to look out for first.

The best enchantments to get for any gear in Minecraft are Unbreaking and Mending. Unbreaking will make sure your gear lasts longer than usual, while Mending will repair your gear whenever you gain XP. In fact, Mending is essential for Minecraft's survival mode as it can fix any of your gear passively and without an anvil consuming levels.

While Mending and Unbreaking will make any gear nearly indestructible, there is still one armor-exclusive enchantment that's sometimes a real lifesaver in survival, and that is the Protection enchantment. The Protection enchantment is one of the best armor enchantments in Minecraft because it will reduce any damage taken based on what level the enchantment is. Protection IV is the highest level this enchantment goes, and reduces the damage taken by anything by 16%.

Protection IV can be stacked depending on how many pieces of armor the player has with the enchantment. Most of Minecraft's other best enchantments for armor are purely situational, like Minecraft's Soul Speed enchantment for boots.

You can always swap out some of the above options depending on your situation or where your base is located. For example, if your base is in the Nether or lava, you might need to get Fire or Blast Protection. Fire and Blast protection may be useful when trying to find Minecraft's Ancient Debris in the Nether. If your base is out in the ocean, you might want to get the Respiration Enchantment for your helmet so that you can breathe underwater in Minecraft.
