Mindy Lahiri is everyone's favorite OBGYN in The Mindy Project. She's witty, she's charming, and she brings us along for the ride on her rollercoaster of a life. Throughout the series' six seasons, we've seen Mindy get herself into quite a bit of trouble.
She may live and work in New York City, but the problems she gets herself into are beyond life in the city — these are problems she brings on herself. Whether it's her honesty or her adorable personality, Mindy always gets herself out of trouble but what if she didn't? We found 10 instances that could have found Mindy in the slammer.
She Entered A High School Without Permission
In the episode "Teen Patient," Mindy runs into her teenage neighbor on her way to work. The two women admire each other and the path they're on. However, Mindy becomes surprised when the young teen stops by to see her at work. She was ready to take her relationship with her boyfriend to the next step and wanted Mindy to write her a prescription for birth control.
Instead of keeping things professional and giving the young girl an exam (or contacting her parents if she was under 18), Mindy went to the high school herself to talk to the couple about intimacy. She then approached the volleyball team and started handing out condoms before escorted out.
In reality, if a deranged woman off the streets of New York entered a high school handing out condoms, the officials would most certainly be called.
She Attacked Josh's Ex (And Kept Her Hostage)
In "Josh and Mindy's Christmas Party," Mindy is excited to host her first Christmas party as a couple with her boyfriend, Josh. The two met in a night club and really hit it off despite some setbacks. Sadly, on the night of the party, Mindy found out Josh was cheating on her with a woman named Heather.
Heather ended up crashing the party, and the women got into an altercation. Instead of kicking Heather out, she told Morgan to handcuff her to her staircase. Keeping a woman hostage in your apartment is a recipe for police to get involved.
She Didn't Pay Her Taxes For Six Years
"Crimes & Misdemeanors & Ex-BFs" was a whirlwind of an episode revolving around Mindy, a new boyfriend, an ex-boyfriend, and a letter from the government. As it turned out, she owed six years in back taxes, which didn't just affect her but her practice, too. The only way to resolve her tax issue was to get in touch with a lawyer she knew: Cliff, her ex-boyfriend. The only problem is, Cliff was still hung up on Mindy and wouldn't work with her if he knew she was seeing Danny.
By the end of the episode, Cliff helps Mindy with her tax issues, but had he not, she could be locked away, lose her practice, or be fined a hefty sum.
She Opens Strangers' Mail
Speaking of Cliff, after Mindy's breakup with Casey, she's going through a rough time and finds herself tripping over a porch full of boxes. Instead of pushing the boxes to the side, she grabs one to hand-deliver it to the person in question (Cliff), but she also opened it.
Cliff was pretty cool about the whole situation, but opening a stranger's mail is a federal offense. Mindy could have easily been arrested for this, and it wasn't the first time she did this either.
Morgan's Sexual Assault Charge
In the episode "Magic Morgan," Mindy is heartbroken over Casey and doesn't have the will to work. After talking to Morgan, he claims that every woman who has been with him has gone on to marry their next lover. He sees it as a curse because he can never find true love. Mindy, however, decides to drink way too much wine and force Morgan to sleep with her so she can find her future husband. She pretty much attacks him and wears him down, but after seeing him in her bed, Mindy calls the whole thing off.
Morgan was so offended by the whole ordeal that he filed a sexual assault case against Mindy since she was his boss. While he dropped the case, this is severe enough to make Mindy lose it all — especially as a doctor.
She Assaulted A Teacher In Front Of Kids
Mindy would do anything to find the person she's supposed to be with, and luckily for her, she has plenty of friends to hook her up with people they know. In "Think Like A Peter," Mindy hits the bar with Peter and tries to pick up a guy using all of Peter's moves and funny enough, it works. Mindy spends the evening talking to a handsome guy, and the two end up spending the night together at her apartment.
The next day, the handsome stranger is nowhere to be found, so Mindy shows up at his place of work to talk: an elementary school. Not only did she enter an elementary school without the proper credentials, but she attacked him in front of his students after she learned he was married!
Lying Her Way Into A Bereavement Group
In the episode "Departed," Danny is helping his dad on the West Coast, and Mindy is left trying to sell her apartment. She makes flyers for an open house but finds herself stuck between a rock and a hard place when she realizes the people helping her think she's a widow.
To sell her apartment, she goes along with the lie and fools everyone into believing Danny had died. While faking her death may not have gotten her locked up, the people around her were upset enough to definitely call security on her.
Her Finance Issues With Her New Clinic
In "So You Think You Can Finance," Mindy finds herself in a distressing situation with her finances. Mindy has never been great with her finances, but it's shown in greater detail in this episode.
After getting a visit from Jody, he points out all the undeposited checks on her desk. Now that she's no longer with Danny, she didn't know how to manage her finances. Not depositing checks for the business is enough to send her business into the gutter, and if the show wanted to get greasy, they could have had Mindy get involved with the IRS.
She Started A Fire At The Practice
In the fourth season's "Homewrecker," the episode starts off with everyone at work, but suddenly the fire alarm goes off. Colette is thankfully a volunteer firefighter and puts out the fire. She claims the fire started by the warm pipes rubbing against all of the clothes in the storage closet.
As it turns out, Mindy turned her closet into a playroom for Leo and stored all her clothes at work. Had it not been Colette, Mindy's negligence could have burned down the entire building! The owner of the building could have most definitely pinned it against Mindy.
She Attacked Daisy On School Grounds
Mindy became annoyed when she was viewed as a careless mother. All the other stay-at-home moms at Leo's school appeared to be so put together and put Mindy down for not supporting Leo at school. Things got worse when Mindy became jealous of a mom at school (Daisy), who her son adored.
After being pushed to the edge by Daisy, Mindy attacked her on school property. Considering this was a private school and Mindy broke a nail in Daisy's face, she could have easily been arrested.
