A third season of Netflix's Mindhunter might happen if fans make enough noise for it, says Asif Kapadia, a director on the show. Premiering on the streamer in 2017, Mindhunter follows a team of FBI agents in the late-1970s and early-'80s, led by Jonathan Groff's Holden Ford, as they interview serial killers to solve open cases and get an insight into their twisted psychology. Based on the book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit, it charts the origins of the use of behavioral science in the FBI's pursuit of criminals. Netflix followed up the initial 10 episodes with a nine-episode season 2 in 2019.

With David Fincher serving as executive producer and de-facto showrunner, directing episodes across both seasons, Mindhunter was a critical success. Other directors included Killing Them Softly's Andrew Dominik, Devil in a Blue Dress' Carl Franklin, and Kapadia, a British documentarian. Imbued with Fincher's creepy style, it charted accurate portrayals of real-life serial killers, including Ed Kemper, "Son of Sam" David Berkowitz, and Wayne Williams. While the series boasted a passionate fanbase, Fincher has said that the viewing figures might not have justified Mindhunter's cost, and in January, 2020, Netflix announced the show was being put on "indefinite hold" as he pursued other projects.

Last week, Netflix hyped an announcement for a Fincher project coming the next day, leading many to speculate a surprise reveal of Mindhunter season 3. When the announcement turned out to be for Fincher's docuseries Voir, some fans were vocal about their disappointment online. Responding to Netflix's Twitter tease, however, Kapadia says that audiences need to “make enough noise” to let the streaming service “know that there is a real interest & demand for Season 3” if it's ever going to actually happen. Check out the tweet below:

While Mindhunter season 1 dealt with Agent Ford's struggles to have behavioral science taken seriously, season 2 saw his method gain credibility as they conducted more interviews and put their methods into practice. A subplot strung through both seasons was the portrayal of the BTK killer, Dennis Rader, who remained at large for 30 years before finally being arrested in 2005. Last year, Fincher said that, had the show continued, Mindhunter would have ended with BTK's capture.

Clearly, Fincher and the writers had a plan not only for season 3, but for others beyond that, with the acclaimed director indicating the show would've gone on through the late-1990s and early-2000s. While there are no plans for more Mindhunter yet, fans of the show can take heart that Netflix has not officially cancelled it. After previously citing the heavy workload as taxing, Fincher is reportedly more excited about returning to the project, and with Kapadia encouraging fans to make sure Netflix hears their voice, anything seems possible.
