Screen Rant can exclusively present a sneak peek from tonight's episode of Mind Over Murder, courtesy of HBO. The jaw-dropping docuseries was directed by award-winning documentary filmmaker Nanfu Wang (In the Same Breath, One Child Nation) and explores the chilling tale of the Beatrice 6, a group of people in a small Nebraska town who confessed to the murder of elderly Helen Wilson and then were all shockingly exonerated by DNA decades later.

If that circumstance alone wasn't enough, some of those exonerated can still vividly recall being at the scene of the crime despite the evidence to the contrary. Mind Over Murder is a tale of extreme psychological complexity, which dives into the prejudices of the town, the theater which the investigation turned into, and the pain still being suffered by the victim's family.

In Screen Rant's exclusive clip, provided courtesy of HBO, the night of February 5, 1985 begins to be laid out - at least in the way the Beatrice 6 remember it. Joseph White, Thomas Winslow, Ada JoAnn Taylor, Debra Shelden, James Dean and Kathy Gonzalez claimed to have been driven to the apartment building where Helen Wilson resided. After parking, they entered through the east door and were greeted by Helen Wilson at apartment number 4, seeing as she recognized Debbie. The clip includes interview footage with some members of the Beatrice 6 as well, who lay out what they remember up until the moment they pushed their way into Helen's home and demanded money from her. The rest of the troublesome tale can be viewed on HBO, when Mind Over Murder episode 2 premeres.

Mind Over Murder episode 5 included testimony from Helen Wilson's family members, especially her grandchildren, allowing viewers to see how beloved she was as well as how differently each person's memory can be after so many decades. The filmmakers track the case from the murder itself to the investigation and trial, eventually exploring the exoneration and the civil suits that came after it. In a story that proves truth is indeed sometimes stranger than fiction, Wang and her team open the door to insightful and important questions about the legal reliability of confessions and the ways bystanders consume criminal cases.
