Miitopia was just released for the Nintendo Switch on May 21st, and the game has been praised for its amazingly customizable nature. Players have been using the makeup and wig system on top of their previously existing Miis to create some incredibly unique characters. Despite this, lots of players don’t know that the game has an Amiibo functionality that only adds to the customization options available in the game.

The Amiibo functionality in Miitopia allows players to scan certain Amiibo and unlock exclusive costumes from some of the most popular Nintendo characters. Here’s how to use the Amiibo system, and what players can unlock from it.

How to Use Amiibo in Miitopia

Miitopia Amiibo Uses Rewards

To unlock the Amiibo functionality, players must interact with the Nintendo Fan NPC found in the first world of the game. This character can be spotted easily in their Mario costume, and the player can encounter them very early in the game. Interacting with the Nintendo Fan will prompt them to ask the player if they have any Amiibo.

If players say yes, they will be able to scan their Amiibo. Amiibo in Miitopia can be scanned to receive either a special costume or three arcade tickets (depending on which Amiibo is scanned). Each Amiibo can only be scanned once, but there’s no limit to how many Amiibos can be scanned in one go.

Currently, there are 26 Amiibo that grant the player a special costume. The available Amiibo include characters from the Mario, Legend of Zelda, Earthbound, Samus, Splatoon, and Animal Crossing series. Certain Amiibo variants (such as the golden version of an Amiibo) work as well. Currently, there are no third-party costumes available, and all third-party Amiibo grant arcade tickets instead. It's also important to note that Amiibo cards are completely incompatible with Miitopia, and won’t provide any rewards.

Amiibo costumes can be worn by any character, however, they all have the same armor rating of fifteen. This is relatively low, but all costumes can be equipped to the cosmetic slot instead if players really like their visual appeal.

These costumes are an incredibly fun way to make Mii’s in Miitopia even more unique. Players also shouldn’t be disappointed with their arcade tickets, as the arcade is a great way to farm money and items that will help with gameplay. It’s currently unknown whether more Amiibo will be compatible with the game in a future patch or update, however, this is the current method for using the Amiibo function in Miitopia.
