Kenan Thompson says he is very interested in appearing on The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers season 2, and that he's still able to skate. Game Changers is the latest entry in the Mighty Ducks franchise, which began with the live-action film The Mighty Ducks in 1992, a film that followed an underdog ice hockey team through their various trials and tribulation, coached by Emilio Estevez as Gordon Bombay, a successful attorney who is forced to do community service. The show spawned two sequels, an animated series that ran from 1996 to 1997, and a real-life hockey team that still plays in Anaheim to this day, though they have since changed their name to the Ducks. Game Changers, which premiered on Disney+ on March 26, 2021, brought back Emilio Estevez to star alongside Lauren Graham and Brady Noon to coach a new crop of youngsters. Game Changers was renewed for a season 2 this August.

Although Kenan Thompson didn't appear in the original film, he was featured in both 1994's D2: The Mighty Ducks and 1996's D3: The Mighty Ducks as Russ Tyler, #56. Russ is an accomplished street hockey player who has perfected the "knucklepuck," a special move that helps the team beat Russia in the Junior Goodwill Games. Although he didn't have as big of a role in D3, he did appear along with other Eden Hall Academy students. D2 was Kenan's first-ever film role, which along with his debut on Nickelodeon's sketch comedy show All That the same year helped cement the 16-year-old actor as a bona fide star.

Speaking with TVLine, Kenan Thompson expressed his enthusiasm for the idea of returning to cameo as Russ in the new series. He explained that he had actually approached showrunner Steve Brill about appearing in season 1, but they "ended up having to do it without [his] participation" due to his commitments on SNL and Kenan season 1. Because of those same commitments, he likewise may not be able to appear on Game Changers season 2, but he insists that "I will do my best, because I still can skate." Read the full quote below:

I would love to do it if they can figure it out. I told [Steve Brill] I wanted to do Season 1, but they ended up having to do it without my participation [due to scheduling]. There's only one me. I can only be in one place at a time. I will do my best, because I still can skate.

Kenan Thompson as Russ in D2 The Mighty Ducks 2

The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers may indeed be forced to rely on cameos like Thompson to keep the nostalgia trip going. Last month, it was announced that Emilio Estevez will not be returning for season 2, so the dynamic of the show will be altered considerably. The Ducks' chances at winning State were already cut short by an injury, and losing their coach will be another huge blow.

The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers is set to begin filming in early 2022, around the same time that Kenan season 2 is slotted to premiere. This might not spell good news for Thompson's wish to appear on the series. However, his passion for the role may drive him to make it happen against the odds, and it's also rewarding simply knowing how interested he is in paying homage to the franchise that kickstarted his career.
