Netflix unveils the first Midnight Mass teaser trailer, the latest horror miniseries from The Haunting of Hill House creator Mike Flanagan. In addition to Hill House, the filmmaker and the streaming platform previously partnered on the second installment in the anthology series The Haunting of Bly Manor and his movies Hush, Before I Wake and Gerald's Game. Development on Midnight Mass was first announced in July 2019 prior to the start of production on the latter series.

Midnight Mass will center on an isolated island community who begin experiencing frightening omens and miraculous events after the arrival of a mysterious priest. The series will see Flanagan reunite with cast members from both series in The Haunting franchise as well as from his prior films, some of which include Kate Siegel, Henry Thomas, Annabeth Gish, Samantha Sloyan, Rahul Kohli, Alex Essoe and Michael Trucco, as well as Flanagan newcomers Zach Gilford and Hamish Linklater. Following a delay in production due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, filming officially got underway on Midnight Mass last August and wrapped in December. Flanagan executive produced Midnight Mass along with Trevor Macy and Intrepid Pictures.

After sharing multiple glimpses at the series' isolated locale of Crockett Island over the weekend, Flanagan and Netflix have unveiled the first trailer for Midnight Mass. In addition to offering a look at the terrifying story to come from the arrival of Linklater's mysterious priest, the video also officially confirms that the series will premiere on Netflix on September 24. Though every Flanagan project has seen the filmmaker write as well as direct, it's interesting to note that Midnight Mass is the first wholly original work in five years. Having recently explored the worlds of adapting Stephen King works, including Gerald's Game at Netflix and Doctor Sleep at Warner Bros., Flanagan's The Haunting series also acted as adaptations of Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House and various Henry James titles with The Haunting of Bly Manor. The first trailer for Midnight Mass certainly shows a promising return to original storytelling for Flanagan.

While the story features vague similarities to King's Revival, which Flanagan spent years attempting to get off the ground, the first trailer for Midnight Mass feels plenty distanced from the 2014 novel. The teaser may not offer too much in the way of hinting at the explanation of the supernatural events occurring in the limited series, it does point towards plenty of terrifying events to come. With any luck, the series will match or outdo Flanagan's The Haunting series when it arrives on Netflix in September.
