Netflix is re-teaming with The Haunting of Hill House creators Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy for a new horror series entitled Midnight Mass. The pair created one of Netflix's biggest surprise hits last year, and the streaming giant is banking on them pulling that off once again.

The Haunting of Hill House was an adaptation of Shirley Jackson's 1959 horror novel of the same name. It centered on the Crain family in two different eras: the early '90s and 2018. The show explored how the Crain family's lives all changed for the worse after they spent the summer living in the titular haunted house. Flanagan wrote several of the show's episodes and served as its sole director. By emphasizing slowly mounting terror and labored filmmaking, Flanagan created one of the most talked about shows of the season. Its constant twists brought in massive critical acclaim that made it one of 2018's best shows. It also successfully launched a new anthology franchise for Netflix that will continue with The Haunting of Bly Manor.

Now, the minds behind The Haunting of Hill House are working on something new. Deadline reports that Netflix, as part of a multi-year TV deal the company signed with Flanagan and Macy, will bring Midnight Mass to life as a seven episode series. Flanagan will direct every episode and executive produce alongside Macy. The series is stated to follow "an isolated island community that experiences miraculous events - and frightening omens - after the arrival of a charismatic, mysterious young priest".

Midnight Mass is the newest outing from Flanagan and Macy, and their collaborations in the past have yielded some impressive results that made them rising stars in the horror and thriller genres. Films like Hush and Gerald's Game were born out of the partnership between the two horror enthusiasts. Both films were released by Netflix. Flanagan and Macy are currently working on The Haunting of Bly Manor and Doctor Sleep, a film adaptation of Stephen King's book of the same name that will serve as a follow up to both the original novel and the film versions of The Shining

While The Haunting of Hill House was the pair's first foray into TV, the result was clearly enough to impress Netflix. It seems that, overall, Netflix was just as taken with The Haunting of Hill House as the rest of its viewers. In addition to bringing back some of its cast for the second season, as well as having a second season in the first place, the streaming giant is doubling down on Flanagan and Macy. Given their shared history, that isn't surprising.
