Netflix's Midnight Mass brought on a lot of discussion about the characters. Especially the consequences of their actions and how they handled them throughout the miniseries, going as far as writing off some of the characters' bravery.

There were a lot of sequences where braveries were put to the ultimate test, whether it be shown verbally or physically. Mike Flanagan's characters certainly showed their bravery in different ways to fight against the dark forces at work until their final breath.

Bev Keane

Bev looking concerned in Midnight Mass

Bev Keane is an overly zealous follower of the small island's only church, St. Patrick's. She's seen as an influential figure to some, while others find it overbearing.

Though viewed as the most hated character in the Mike Flanagan Universe and in the show, she showed a surprising amount of courage. Throughout the immense amount of danger displayed in Midnight Mass, Bev showed the bravery in her personality when she followed her faith blindly. Despite the hatred thrown at her from certain members of her community, Bev pressed on until the very end when the newly transitioned vampires abandoned her as they gathered in the town square before sunrise. At the sight of first light, her bravery was swiftly replaced by fear as she tried to bury herself on the beach before she disintegrated to ashes as the sun rose.

Ali Hassan

Ali Hassan standing in a living room in Netflix's Midnight Mass.

The son of the island's Muslim sheriff, Ali is desperate to fit in with the rest of the Crockett Island community.

Ali's bravery can be seen as murky, or cowardly even. However, he displayed the typical behavior of a rebellious teenager, namely when it came to impressing his friends, Warren and Ooker, going as far as insulting his father in front of their local drug dealer. To most teens, this can be seen as brave. However, it's quickly written off by viewers when he runs further into the depths of Catholicism, thus abandoning his father and religion as Ali made life-altering decisions that affected his overall fate.

Father Paul

Father Paul is the young, mysterious priest who suddenly appears at the beginning of the miniseries.

In the final episode, Father Paul incited a strong display of bravery by admitting his faults when he brought the Vampire to Crockett Island, for the sole purpose of healing Mildred Gunning, his love interest. He took a stand against Bev Keane, even when Bev turned the islanders against him, calling him a martyr. He stood by his courageous decision, despite inflicting the initial irreparable damage upon Crockett Island and thus earning the forgiveness of Mildred.

Joe Collie

Joe Collie is Crockett Island's town drunk, living with the consequence of paralyzing the mayor's daughter, Leeza, when he drunkenly shot her in the back.

Joe's bravery shines tenfold when he gives up drinking after Leeza confronts him and forgives him for her injury. Anyone who lives with alcoholism knows it's a tough illness to conquer and considered a courageous feat to face it. Though his bravery is short-lived due to a fatal conversation with Father Paul, Joe encounters a true test to either fall off the wagon or to continue his sobriety, ending up on the path of sobriety until his final moment.

Annie Flynn

Annie Flynn talking to someone in Midnight Mass

Annie Flynn is a devout Catholic wife to a fisherman and the mother of two boys, one of whom returns to the island after being incarcerated for the death of a young woman due to his drinking.

Annie is shown to be one of the bravest characters by simply being a mother. When her husband Ed nonverbally expressed his disappointment of the impending arrival of their eldest son Riley in the first episode, Annie hid it from him, like any mother would, wanting to shelter her child from harm. But her courage stood out the most when Annie verbally confronted Bev Keane in the Midnight Mass finale. Annie faced Bev and sacrificed herself so the humans she hid with could escape with their lives, though it meant being turned into a vampire.

Sheriff Hassan

Sheriff Hassan is a Muslim in Crockett Island's predominately Catholic community. Unlike his son, Ali, Sheriff Hassan has trouble fitting in with the rest of the religious islanders.

Sheriff Hassan easily ranks in the top five of bravest characters in the show, just by standing by his religious beliefs and not giving in to the immense amount of peer pressure coming mostly from Bev Keane. In the penultimate episode, Sheriff Hassan bravely conveys in a heartbreaking and thought-provoking monologue the prejudice he's faced over the years as a Muslim in law enforcement. He also displays an incredible amount of courage by being a father, shielding his son from danger and the surrounding bigotry, making Sheriff Hassan one of the best characters in Midnight Mass.

Leeza Scarborough

Leeza Scarborough is the mayor's daughter who was initially in a wheelchair until the end of the second episode when she miraculously stood and walked to Father Paul at his prompting, unaware she was healed by the Vampire's blood.

The injury that led to Leeza becoming a wheelchair user was caused by a gunshot wound to her spine, fired by an intoxicated Joe Collie. After she regained her ability to walk, she made the bravest decision in her life by facing Joe, the man who altered her life, in his trailer. Through a moving monologue, she expressed her initial hatred towards him, but ended up forgiving Joe for his actions.

Sarah Gunning

Sarah Gunning is Crockett Island's resident doctor and the daughter of Mildred and, revealed in the finale, Monsignor Pruitt (Father Paul).

Sarah expressed that she felt some sort of prejudice against her sexuality in her youth. But she said she continued to stand by it and presented herself to be brave for her mother as she battled dementia by staying with her instead of moving off the island to live the life she was meant to have. In her final moments and in one last act of outstanding bravery, as she lay dying, she chose to die as a human rather than living her life as a vampire by rejecting the blood from Father Paul.

Riley Flynn

Riley Flynn stands in the doorway at night in Midnight Mass.

Riley Flynn is a recovering alcoholic, having left the island before the events in Midnight Mass to pursue a career as a venture capitalist. He returns after being released from spending four years in prison for killing a young woman named Tara Beth in a drunk driving accident.

Throughout the show, he lived with the consequences of his actions. However, at night, the consequences become the scariest when Riley was haunted by Tara Beth. When Father Paul opened an AA chapter for Riley so he wouldn't have to travel back and forth on the ferry to the mainland, Riley was not shy about revealing his atheistic and grim views of the world, showing his bravery bit by bit verbally if not by actions. The larger portion of his courage appeared when he told Erin Greene, his childhood sweetheart, about his transition into a vampire, which was a traumatic experience for him. Moments before his death, Riley gained the acceptance and forgiveness of Tara Beth in one last haunting, a recompense for his final act of courage.

Erin Greene

Erin Greene looks shocked in an office in Midnight Mass

Erin Greene is the childhood sweetheart of Riley Flynn. She returns to Crockett Island to become a schoolteacher and raise her unborn child.

Erin is by far the bravest character in Midnight Mass. She faced many obstacles in her youth, including the wrath of her alcoholic and abusive mother, to marrying a man with similar features as her mother. Upon discovering her pregnancy, she escaped her abusive marriage and started a new life on Crockett Island. After the shocking loss of her child and Riley in the span of two episodes, Erin joined forces with Mildred, Sarah, and Sheriff Hassan to fight against the newly formed vampires. In a final display of bravery, as she allowed the Vampire to fatally attack her, Erin repeatedly stabbed its wings to make it difficult for it to fly away before the sun rose.
