Following the show's cancelation at Netflix, Mike Flanagan has revealed what The Midnight Club season 2 would have been about. Primarily based on Christopher Pike's novels of the same, the horror series centered on a group of terminally ill teenagers living in a Seattle hospice who tell each other scary stories every night to distract from their situations, though begin to expect the location to host something sinister. Despite scoring acclaim from critics, The Midnight Club was canceled after just one season, but with many questions left unanswered, Flanagan did promise ahead of time he wouldn't leave audiences without answers.

Sticking to his promise, Flanagan has taken to his Tumblr to reveal super detailed The Midnight Club season 2 plans. With everything from answers to the nature of the Shadow seen by certain patients to the fates of surviving characters from season 1, Flanagan left no stone unturned for what his vision was for the now-canceled Netflix show, including how it could continue past season 2. Flanagan said about the show and its cancelation:

It’s a shame we won’t get to make it, but it would be a bigger shame if you guys simply had to live with the unanswered questions and the cliffhanger ending. I loved making this show, and I am so proud of the cast and crew. Particularly our cast, who attacked this story with incredible spirit and bravery each and every day. But for now, we’ll put the fire out, and leave the library dark and quiet. To those before, and to those after. To us now, and to those beyond. Seen or unseen, here but not here. I’ll always be grateful that I got to be part of this Club.

Everything Mike Flanagan Revealed About The Midnight Club Season 2 Story

Aya Furukawa and Sauriyan Sapkota in The Midnight Club

In his detailed post, Flanagan reveals that The Midnight Club season 2 would see multiple surviving members of the titular group meet their end by its finale. Sauriyan Sapkota's Amesh would see his glioblastoma advancing quickly, and telling the first story of the season, and would be comforted by Robert Longstreet's unnamed Janitor briefly seen in season 1 of the horror series. Longstreet's character would become a more recurring player in The Midnight Club season 2 as he is seen also visiting Aya Furukawa's Natsuki, the second character to die, and Iman Benson's Ilonka, the final major death of the season and the one who would realize the Janitor is actually Death personified, while the Shadow some audiences theorized to be Death is known as Themselves, which takes the dying to a place of "understanding and catharsis" for what comes next.

Flanagan's The Midnight Club season 2 did come with some brighter spots, as well, as Chris Sumpter's Spencer would "ride the swell of antiviral advancements" in the '90s surrounding HIV, ultimately no longer classified as terminal by the end of the season and going back home. It would also be revealed that the reason for the tattoo and bald head of Heather Langenkamp's Doctor Stanton is because she is the daughter of the original Paragon cult leader, Aceso, her real name being Georgina Ballard, and that she was undergoing chemotherapy for cancer, which would be successful and go into remission. The two terrifying ghosts seen by Ilonka and Kevin, who would die just before the former, are confirmed to be that of the Brightcliffe builder and his wife, whose name was based off the builder of the hotel that inspired Stephen King's The Shining, and that Ilonka and Kevin were gender-flipped reincarnations of the two, making them true soul mates.

The Midnight Club Story Plans Could've Extended In Season 3

Ilonka and Kevin in The Midnight Club

One of the more interesting takeaways from Flanagan's detailed The Midnight Club season 2 story plans was his note that it would've ended with Cheri, the lone member still at Brightcliffe, telling the story of her friends to a new table of patients, who would serve as the new series leads. Also confirming that the original cast would be able to return in stories told, it's clear that the horror Netflix show could've extended into a season 3, had audiences connected to it in the same vein as his Haunting anthology series and Midnight Mass miniseries. Though some may be disappointed they won't see his plans to come fruition on screen, they can at least take comfort having all the answers to the unanswered questions from The Midnight Club.
