The Midnight Club has been canceled by Netflix after just one season. Debuting on Netflix back in October, The Midnight Club is an adaptation of the 1994 book by Christopher Pike. The story centers around a group of terminally ill teenagers at the Brightcliffe Hospice who meet up nightly as part of the titular club, commiserating and trading scary stories. As they form connections and try to come to terms with loss, strange occurrences begin to offer the group reasons to hope and reasons to be afraid. In contrast to previous shows from Mike Flanagan, who co-created the young adult drama with Leah Fong, The Midnight Club was intended as an ongoing series and even ended on a cliffhanger.

But now, as reported by TheWrap, Netflix has opted to cancel The Midnight Club after season 1. The news comes hours after the announcement that Flanagan and his creative partner Mike Tracy are leaving Netflix and taking their Intrepid Pictures production company to Amazon's Prime Video. It's noted in the reporting that, in spite of both reviews from critics and audiences, The Midnight Club did not gain massive viewership compared to other Netflix Originals. It peaked in its second week, reaching near the top of the charts with 49.9 million hours viewed.

What The Midnight Club Season 2 Could've Explored

The Midnight Club, featuring a large ensemble cast that included Iman Benson, Igby Rigney, Ruth Codd, Annarah Cymone, Chris Sumpter, Adia, Aya Furukawa, Sauriyan Sapkota, and A Nightmare on Elm Street star Heather Langenkamp, ended with a glimmer of happiness and more intrigue. Kevin (Rigney) and Ilonka (Benson) decide to pursue a relationship, despite their grim situation. And in the final moments of the series, it's revealed Dr. Georgina Stanton (Langenkamp) hides an ominous hourglass tattoo, meaning she is potentially lying about her true identity and intentions.

If it continued, The Midnight Club likely would have explored those threads and introduced new characters into the fold. Even though it's disappointing for fans that The Midnight Club season 2 will not happen, Flanagan has promised that he will reveal his plans for the series in the event that Netflix cancels the show. So, those curious about the cliffhanger and the group's romantic relationships should still get answers.

What's Next For Mike Flanagan?

Flanagan and Tracy are wrapping up their deals at Netflix. They have one more project at the streamer, which is the upcoming miniseries The Fall of the House of Usher. Teased by Flanagan as "blood-soaked" and "crazy," the modern retelling of the Edgar Allan Poe story is planned to debut in 2023. It sounds like a departure from the quieter approach of The Midnight Club, which definitely had a lot more story left to tell, but it will surely be worth watching.
