Mickey Rourke Out, Woody Harrelson In For 'Seven Psychopaths'

Oscar-nominee (and Hollywood "bad boy") Mickey Rourke has been making headlines of late, thanks to the frank manner in which he's expressed his disdain for Iron Man 2 and his thoughts on Hollywood in general. While Rourke will soon be back on the big screen in Immortals, he recently took a pass on reprising his brief role as "Tool" in next year's The Expendables 2 - in favor of a smaller production, titled Seven Psychopaths.

However, Rourke has had a (public) falling out with that film's writer/director, Martin McDonagh, and left the project. A replacement for the actor has already been found in the form of another Academy Award-nominee: Woody Harelson.

McDonagh is an Oscar-winner for his work on the 2004 short film, Six Shooter. However, he is perhaps best known for his decorated feature-length 2008 flick, In Bruges, a bitingly clever dark dramedy that stars Colin Farrell alongside such respected and recognizable non-American thespians like Brendan Gleeson (The Guard), Ralph Fiennes (Coriolanus), and Clémence Poésy (127 Hours) - all three of which are also alumni of the Harry Potter franchise.

Hence the interest surrounding Seven Psychopaths, which likewise boasts an ingenious comical Noir plot and accomplished cast - as can be noted by reading the film's official synopsis:

From Oscar-winning writer and director Martin McDonagh comes a star-studded, blood-drenched, black comedy. Marty (Colin Farrell) is a struggling writer who dreams of finishing his screenplay Seven Psychopaths. All he needs is a little focus and inspiration.

Billy (Sam Rockwell) is Marty’s best friend, an unemployed actor and part time dog thief, who wants to help Marty by any means necessary.Hans (Christopher Walken) is Billy’s partner in crime. A religious man with a violent past.

Charlie (Harrelson) is the psychopathetic gangster whose beloved dog, Billy and Hans have just stolen. Charlie’s unpredictable, extremely violent and wouldn’t think twice about killing anyone or anything associated with the theft. Marty is going to get all the focus and inspiration he needs, just as long as he lives to tell the tale.

Additional members of the cast include Olga Kurylenko (Centurion, Quantum of Solace) and cult musician/actor Tom Waits (The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, The Book of Eli).

Seven Psychopaths (obviously) won't be a mainstream hit, despite the high-predigree of its cast and director. It still reads as having the potential to be a (pardon the phrasing) deliciously dark piece of entertainment, complete with some memorably quirky/psychotic characters and lots of sharp wit to go around.

Principal photography on Seven Psychopaths has reportedly gotten underway, so it (hopefully) shouldn't be too long before an official theatrical release date is announced. We will aim to let you know when that happens.
