Those of you baying for blood for news on who will take up the role of the barbarian Conan got what you were hunting for when Jason Momoa was recently cast as the lead character.
Latino Review scooped the news that Momoa would be playing the iconic muscled hero, but also reported that the role of Conan's father, Corin, was offered to the mighty Mickey Rourke. Now we learn that Rourke is officially in negotiations to play Conan's dad in the remake of Conan the Barbarian which is being directed by Marcus Nispel (Pathfinder, Friday the 13th remake). The movie will see the titular character embark on a quest to avenge the slaughter of his people.
It's taken a little detour to get there but it's looking very likely Rourke will get the part: When Latino Review reported that he was offered the role, it seemed that the deal fell through. However, Heat Vision is reporting that the two sides came back to the table in the last couple of weeks. I'm guessing - if it was on Rourke's side things, it fell apart during the first round of dealmaking - The Wrestler comeback star gave it some thought and realized how awesome it would be both for him to play the role and for us as the audience to see him in it.
Like the road to get Rourke back at the table, it's not being easy-going for this project: Before Nispel there were multiple directors and production companies attached over the ten years it's been in the making and even original star Arnold Schwarzenegger was once tapped to reprise his role. But we now appear to be on a smooth road and we'll likely be seeing the new Conan before the end of summer 2011.
Are you happy with Rourke being the one in the running to play Conan's father?
Conan starts shooting this March in Bulgaria and, as stated, will likely open in the summer of 2011.
