While it's been four years since Michael Mann's last feature film (Public Enemies), his many fans haven't forgotten about him and have been eagerly awaiting his next project - especially since many of them were slightly disappointed with the last one. Fortunately, Mann's hiatus from feature directing is over, as he is set to helm a film from his own original script.
We are learning from Variety that Mann's currently untitled thriller got the go-ahead from Legendary Pictures, with Chris Hemsworth attached for a lead role. Thomas Tull (The Dark Knight Rises) and Jon Jashni (Jack the Giant Slayer) have joined Mann to produce.
Details on the project are scarce, but we do know that Mann and Morgan Davis Foehl - who is also writing the Mass Effect script - have been co-writing and developing the script for over a year and that the plot involves cyber threats and attacks, so it sounds like more of a modern thriller, harking back to Mann's work on Collateral and Heat.
Hemsworth's presence may come as a bit of a surprise considering he is involved in so many projects at the moment, but with Robopocalypse being delayed and the Snow White and the Huntsman sequel moving at a snail's pace, it looks like he's free for the planned June start date. He also may have jumped at the chance to work with Mann and possibly take on a meatier, more grounded dramatic role, which would be a departure from his work on Thor: The Dark World, in some respects.
Mann also has his hands in several other projects, including the Tony Accardo biopic Big Tuna, real-life racing story Go Like Hell and In the Heart of the Sea, but it appears that this untitled thriller will take precedence, as Warner Bros. has said production on In the Heart of the Sea will not likely begin until the fall. Either way, it looks like we will be seeing much more of Mann's work and not have to wait four-five years to see it.
Mann's fans will most likely be happy to see him return to a genre in which he has crafted some of his best work, and Hemsworth fans will probably be excited to see him stretch his acting muscles - though some of his lady fans might just want to see the muscles.
Although we don't know much about the project plot-wise, with the planned June start date, we're bound to get some more info soon and when we do, we'll make sure to pass it along.
