Michael Fassbender Talks 'Alien' Connection to 'Prometheus'

Prometheus is but a few short weeks away from going into production, and yet the general film-loving public still doesn’t know if it’s a prequel to the classic 1979 film Alien or not.

Despite perpetual rumors that the movie is in fact a prequel to the beloved sci-fi/horror series, director Ridley Scott has been resolute in his insistence that Prometheus is a completely original story, sans xenomorphs and all. But if that’s the case, why does star Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class) continue to say Prometheus is “definitely connected” to Alien?

Fassbender recently talked to Entertainment Weekly about a number of things related to the upcoming Prometheus, including what drew him to the production:

“[I’m a drooling Alien] fan. Alien and Aliens, both of them. And Blade Runner, which I recently watched again. I’m really looking forward to stepping into a Ridley [Scott] sci-fi world. […] [T]he script [by Damon Lindelof] is really intelligent and has a nice pace to it. Plus, if I’m honest with you, I sort of approach my work as a fan. I’m a massive movie fan and I like to go on an adventure ride as much as I like to see something that has a bit of social commentary to it.”

When asked if the character he was playing was an android, as has been reported, Fassbender said:

“I don’t know what to say! I don’t want to get in trouble…”

He then nonverbally confirmed with a nod that, yes, he was playing an android.

Finally – and most importantly – when asked if Prometheus was an Alien prequel, Fassbender said:

“It’s a different story, but it’s also got the traditional roots. Alien fans will recognize things in it. It’s not ignoring Alien, there’s still a link to that world. But it’s a different story. It’s definitely connected, though.”

This is at the very least one step further than Ridley Scott’s infamous and totally ill-defined comment that there would be “strands of Alien D.N.A.” in Prometheus. Unless Michael Fassbender was referring to a thematic or stylistic connection to the film that made chest-bursting aliens all the rage, he has all but confirmed that this new film is a prequel of some sort. (He said something similar in a previous interview.) Whether or not it’s the sort of prequel that will include H.R. Giger-designed alien monsters, however, is another story entirely.

The fact of the matter is, there’s just too much double-talk – and there are too many rumors – for there to be nothing going on behind the curtain on this one. If the definitive answer to “Is Prometheus a prequel to Alien?” is a resounding “No,” then why wouldn’t Michael Fassbender just say no?

I suppose the only way to be sure one way or another is to just wait it out. Prometheus, which also stars Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Sean Harris, and Kate Dickie, is scheduled to hit theaters June 8th, 2012.
