Michael B. Jordan Playing Tom Clancy's John Clark In Film Series

advertising

Michael B. Jordan will star in a new film series based on the Tom Clancy character John Clark. Making a name for himself as Wallace on The Wire, Jordan is one of his generation's brightest acting talents. Over the past handful of years, he's strung together several acclaimed performances - many of which came under the direction of Ryan Coogler. Most recently, the two collaborated on Marvel's Black Panther, with Jordan's Erik Killmonger widely considered one of the franchise's best villains. Jordan's turn was so compelling and empathetic, some have him in the running for a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Oscars.

With his star continuing to rise, Jordan is keen on finding new projects. He's currently in the midst of filming the courtroom drama Just Mercy (co-starring Jamie Foxx and Brie Larson), and he's planning another film with Coogler in the form of Wrong Answer. He also isn't averse to franchise fare, as evidenced by his role in the Creed movies. And soon, he'll be headlining another series that distributor Paramount already has big plans for.

According to Variety, Jordan will portray Clark in adaptations of the novels Without Remorse and Rainbow Six. The former will be the first out of the gate, as it details the character's origins and early days with the CIA. In addition to starring, Jordan is producing the films, alongside Oscar winner Akiva Goldsman, Josh Applebaum, and Andre Nemac.

Longtime Clancy fans will recognize the name John Clark as a key supporting player in several Jack Ryan stories, who was previously played by the likes of Willem Dafoe and Liev Schreiber onscreen. It'll be interesting to see what Jordan brings to the role, but he certainly reads as a strong choice. His charisma and natural talent have endeared him to viewers, so he'll likely make a convincing action hero who's easy to root for. And as Creed showed, Jordan has no trouble getting into top physical shape for a movie, meaning he'll be able to handle the physical nature of the part with relative ease. It is unknown when Without Remorse will begin production (there is no writer or director attached at the moment), but one would assume the necessary pieces will fall into place soon.

For Jordan, this will be a real test to gauge his bankability as a leading man. Previous outings like Creed and Black Panther had built-in fan bases that all but guaranteed their box office success, which is something Clancy adaptations arguably lack. Jack Ryan was a sizable draw in the 1990s, but the property certainly lost some of its luster along the way, as evidenced by 2014's Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit grossing a meager $50.5 million domestically. Paramount could use a new reliable series, so hopefully they're able to deliver the goods with these John Clark movies.
