In just a few months, Disney and Lucasfilm are planning to release the next installment in the Star Wars saga with Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, but that is only just the beginning of what's to come. Aside from the main set of films, which Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy recently described as "the Skywalker family saga," there are also several other spinoff films (also known as the Star Wars Anthology movies) on the way.
The first of those spinoff films will be Star Wars: Rogue One, which is already filming and is set for release in the winter of next year. The Anthology originally set to follow that was to be directed by Fantastic Four's Josh Trank, until a series of untimely events caused Trank to leave the film. The slot that film previously held was eventually filled by the Han Solo spinoff, with The Lego Movie's Phil Lord and Chris Miller set to helm it for a May 2018 release.
By most accounts though, the film Trank was working on was not the Han Solo spinoff, but rather one centering around Boba Fett, the ruthless bounty hunter who is among the most popular Star Wars characters to date. While that film is no longer set to hit theaters three years from now, most reports say the Boba Fett spinoff is still in development with a possible 2020 release date. As such, it's never too early to discuss potential casting choices, and now a rumor has arisen suggesting who Disney and Lucasfilm may be interested in for the role.
TheWrap reporter Jeff Sneider recently took to his Meet the Movie Press podcast (via /Film) to reveal the latest rumor that Disney and Lucasfilm are interested in Creed actor Michael B. Jordan for the role of Boba Fett in the eventual spinoff. As Sneider himself suggests, it's still too early in the process to definitively say anything about Jordan and the role, but it could still offer some insight into what type of actors they are looking at to take over as Boba Fett.
That being said, this rumor should be taken with a huge grain of salt for a multitude of reasons. First off, it's still very early days in the development of the Boba Fett spinoff and perhaps a little too soon for Lucasfilm to cast the role, although it could be feasible that the studio is already discussing potential casting choices. Even then, the casting of Jordan as the famous bounty hunter does not make immediate sense, given that most of the roles he has taken on before have been very different from what playing Boba Fett would call for.
However, it's not completely off the table that Jordan could end up playing Boba Fett. For one, Jordan has massive acting chops and elevates almost any role he takes on. Also, one possibility recently discussed has been the potential of Boba Fett being a mantle that is passed on rather than remaining the same character from Episode II: Attack of the Clones for the entirety of the Star Wars saga, which would potentially explain the casting change. If nothing else, the selection of Michael B. Jordan as Boba Fett would make for an interesting casting choice, although with the movie still being some way off, it's likely going to be a bit longer before we find out who will play the infamous bounty hunter.
Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens hits theaters on December 18th, 2015, followed by Rogue One: A Star Wars Story on December 16th, 2016, Star Wars: Episode VIII on May 26th, 2017, and the Han Solo Star Wars Anthology film on May 25th, 2018. Star Wars: Episode IX is expected to reach theaters in 2019, followed by the third Star Wars Anthology film in 2020.
