Talk has been swirling about which one of Katie Thurston’s contestants from The Bachelorette would make the best Bachelor, but despite Michael Allio’s popularity, there are several reasons why he might not be the right choice. Many of Katie’s men have been suggested for the next lead of The Bachelor, including Andrew Spencer and even Greg Grippo after his recent self-elimination. Michael’s name repeatedly pops up in future Bachelor discussions. However, his unique circumstances might impact his ability to find love as the lead.

It’s no surprise that Michael captured Katie's and viewers’ hearts during his time on season 17. Aside from being handsome and well-rounded, Michael has a tragic backstory that has helped shape him into the amazingly resilient and loving man he is today. Katie quickly fell for the single dad and widower who lost his wife to cancer, and she seemed eager to start a life with Michael and his son. However, being away from his son was eating away at Michael, and he decided it was the best decision for his family for him to return home. Katie was heartbroken but understood why he had to leave.

There are few things that all viewers agree on this season, but one thing they all share is the conviction that Michael is a great guy. But just because he’s a good person and dating prospect doesn’t mean he’s the right choice to be the Bachelor. For one, Michael’s wife passed away a couple of years ago and Michael has admitted he’s only just getting back into dating. Becoming the Bachelor would be like learning how to swim by getting thrown in the deep end of the pool. Michael also has his son to worry about, and being thrust into the national spotlight might not be the best thing for his family.

In addition to his more personal concerns, fans also have doubts that Michael has truly gotten over his breakup with Katie. Michael left the show for the good of his son, not because he didn't care for Katie, and it seems he still has some lingering feelings for her. On the Men Tell All episode, when asked if he would give things another shot with Katie if he had the chance, Michael said he “100 percent” would. Michael also demonstrated he still has feelings for the Bachelorette by posting a thirsty comment on Katie’s recent racy Instagram pic (via Cosmopolitan). It’s totally understandable that he might need time to get over Katie, but if that’s the case, he probably shouldn’t jump into being the Bachelor.

By all accounts, former Bachelorette contestant Michael is a stand-up guy. But it takes more than that to make a great lead. The best leads possess the combination of being entertaining, earnest, and ready for marriage. Though Michael has the first two, he may not be ready to shoulder the burden of being the Bachelor. It might be best for him to depart from the franchise, at least for the time being, and focus on getting himself in the right headspace to begin looking for the love that he very much deserves.
