The trailer for Metal Lords has arrived, revealing an in-depth look at the Game of Thrones creators' new Netflix movie. Following the incredible success of HBO's fantasy series, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss inked a lucrative $200 million deal to develop programming for the streaming service. So far, the dynamic duo, commonly referred to as D&D, has acted as executive producers of Netflix's critically-acclaimed drama The Chair, and they are currently adapting Liu Cixin’s trilogy of novels into a sci-fi show for the streamer titled The Three-Body Problem.

The first feature film to come of the creative partnership will be Metal Lords, which is written solely by Weiss, produced by Benioff, and directed by Peter Sollet (Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist). The film follows two teenage best friends, Hunter (Adrian Greensmith) and Kevin (Jaeden Martell), who want to form a heavy metal band to compete at an upcoming Battle of the Bands competition, but first they must recruit a talented cellist at their high school, Emily (Isis Hainsworth), to play in their group. To write the music for the film, Weiss recruited the talents of Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello and Game of Thrones composer Ramin Djawadi.

Now, Netflix has debuted a trailer for Metal Lords, unveiling a closer look at Weiss' first movie coming to the streaming service. Based on this footage, Metal Lords appears to be a coming-of-age musical comedy with a lot of heart. Watch the trailer below:

Weiss, a lifelong fan of heavy metal, originally wrote a much different version of the Metal Lords script during the early 2000s, which was shelved when Game of Thrones came along. After the hit fantasy series ended after eight seasons and Weiss and Benioff signed the Netflix deal, he had to update the story to reflect the modern-day realities of high school. Benioff has written many film scripts sans Weiss, such as 25th Hour, Troy, and Brothers, but not vice versa. As a six-time Emmy Award winner, Weiss is a more than capable writer, though it will be interesting to see how he fares as the sole screenwriting credit.

It's unclear how much of an interest there still is in D&D's projects after the vitriolic response to the final season of Game of Thrones, so Metal Lords will definitely be an early test of the duo's marketability. But for many Netflix subscribers not concerned with this history, Metal Lords can simply scratch that itch for a fun and heartwarming musical comedy in the vein of School of Rock or Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist. The wait won't be long, as it comes to Netflix on April 8.
