YouTube channel Just An Idea Studio recreated the original Metal Gear Solid in Unreal Engine 5 to incredibly stunning results. For the last several months, numerous creators have put their efforts towards building impressive game demos with Epic Games' Unreal Engine 5 technology. One fan, in particular, explored the possibilities of a modern Superman game with the all-new engine, creating a demo that sees the Man of Steel soaring high above Metropolis. Environment Artist Christian Gomm recently shared footage of their Riverwood recreation, which highlights the untapped potential of an Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim remake.

Epic Games initially showcased Unreal Engine 5 on the PlayStation 5 back in May 2020, unveiling a real-time tech demo featuring claustrophobic interior spaces and a vast desert landscape replete with ruins. Since then, multiple studios have confirmed plans to build their new projects on the next-gen technology, the likes of The Coalition, Game Science, and Konami included. Meanwhile, late last year, Fortnite became the first game to utilize UE5 in an official capacity. Some of the most impressive applications of the engine continue to come alive thanks to fan-made projects, however.

Longtime Metal Gear Solid fan Just An Idea Studio (via Wccftech) recently replayed the 1998 classic and decided to explore what the title could bring to the table on modern technology. Using Unreal Engine 5, its virtualized geometry system Nanite, and the global illumination and reflections system Lumen, Just An Idea Studio built a nearly eight-minute gameplay demo of the beloved Hideo Kojima-directed game on Epic's latest game engine. The lighting and shadows in MGS have never looked as good as they do in the following video:

The latter half of the Unreal Engine 5 video offers a brief overview as to how the creator went about designing this impressive project, which will undoubtedly increase hopes for a Metal Gear Solid remake of some kind. Though rumors and speculation insist a remake is indeed in the works, specifically for MGS3, Konami and Co. remain mum on the matter.

Apart from the ill-received Metal Gear Survive that launched in February 2018, the franchise's last entry of consequence hit store shelves in 2015 in the form of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. To the chagrin of many a fan, it marked the end of an era due to series creator Hideo Kojima's departure from the Konami ranks. What the publisher has planned for the brand next in terms of AAA game releases presently remains a mystery.
