The PlayStation 5 is less than two months away from release, and one of the exclusive games that is now rumored to be in development for the next-gen console is a full-blown remake of Metal Gear Solid. The classic PS1 game from Konami by Death Stranding producer Hideo Kojima is considered by many as one of the greatest video games of all time and spawned several sequels, including 2015’s critically acclaimed Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

The success and popularity of the Metal Gear franchise has helped it grow beyond just video games, including a board game based on Metal Gear Solid was scheduled for release this year but was unfortunately delayed to 2021. On the video game front, it’s still unknown whether publisher Konami has any plans to develop a new major installment in the series since the company and franchise creator Kojima split up several years ago. But with how bad 2018’s Metal Gear Survive performed, there’s little hope that the company has any plans for a plans for a Metal Gear Solid 6.

The new rumor may give fans of the franchise a bit of hope though. YouTube channel RedGamingTech, known by some for accurate hardware leaks in the past, claimed in a new video that a remake of Metal Gear Solid is in the works and won’t be an enhanced version of the game as was with Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes on the GameCube, but a complete next-gen remake. According to the YouTuber, their source claims that they are “pretty damn positive it exists” and that the game is coming to the PS5 and PC, although they aren’t sure whether they will be released at the same time, nor do they claim to know how far along in development the alleged remake is.

RedGamingTech also claims that Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots will also be released on the PS5 but won’t be full remakes like Metal Gear Solid and will possibly just be remasters instead. Konami previously did something similar on the PS4 back in 2018 with Castlevania Requiem, which included ports of the PSP versions of Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night with several improvements and added features.

If the rumor holds true, it will be the first good news fans of the Metal Gear franchise will have heard since Kojima’s departure. If Konami turns out to be working on a Metal Gear Solid remake, hopefully they’re able to execute as well as Final Fantasy VII Remake or the Resident Evil 2 remake. And hopefully the company has learned from the criticisms of Castlevania Requiem and are able to do more for the PS5 releases of Metal Gear Solid's three sequels.
