Metal Gear Solid is arguably one of the most influential games in the past 25 years. Spearheaded by famous game designer Hideo Kojima, the Metal Gear Solid series went on to spawn four main sequels and a number of spin-off games. Its bizarre storytelling, combined with interesting and often never-before-seen game mechanics, took the industry by storm when the first title launched on the original PlayStation in 1998.

The game focuses on Solid Snake, who comes out of retirement at the request of Colonel Roy Campbell. Campbell tells Snake that FOXHOUND, which is described as a renegade genetically-enhanced special forces unit, has seized a remote island in Alaska that goes by the codename "Shadow Moses." The island hosts a nuclear weapons disposal facility, as well as Metal Gear REX, a mecha with nuclear capabilities that FOXHOUND is threatening to use against the American government.

With Kojima's departure from Konami in 2015 after the release of Metal Gear Solid 5, fans thought the series had met its untimely demise. However, new leaks and rumors suggest that the original 1998 game that took the world by storm may be due for a PlayStation 5 remake.

Will Metal Gear Solid Get A PS5 Remake?

Metal Gear Solid Remake Leak

The source of the rumor, a YouTube channel called RedGamingTech, claims that the entire Metal Gear series is going to get a makeover in the coming years. According to the channel, a source told creators that the original Metal Gear Solid will be getting a full remake for PC and PlayStation 5, and that Metal Gear Solid 2, 3 and 4 will be receiving an HD remaster treatment. While far from confirmed, fans are already theorizing that the remake will be done by Bluepoint Games, which is well-known for its critically acclaimed remakes of Shadow of the Colossus and Demon's Souls on PS5.

Of course, it's always difficult to lend any credence to rumors, especially when a release date would be far, far in the future, but a Metal Gear revival may be more likely than fans originally thought. In the past, it had been reported that Konami was potentially looking into a Silent Hill revival, another beloved franchise closely associated with Hideo Kojima ever since the cancellation of Silent Hills, and may already have a new game in production. However, Konami has also pulled resources away from its gaming division as recently as last month, which means the rumors may just be rumors after all, full of hope but little substance. That said, the company hasn't gutted the division completely, meaning it may just be a reorganization instead of the end of Konami video games altogether.

Nothing is confirmed so far, but if Konami is finally ready to open the door on all the franchises Kojima left behind, a Metal Gear Solid remake is most likely high up on the list of priorities, especially given how successful and well-received games like Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Demon's Souls have been recently. It isn't likely, and Kojima will almost assuredly not be involved, but it is possible.
