Fans can now get a taste of how Oscar Isaac could look as Solid Snake in the Metal Gear Solid movie, courtesy of some newly-released fan art. Created by Hideo Kojima, the Metal Gear franchise debuted with two installments on the MXS2 home computer. The saga exploded into the mainstream via the Playstation with 1998's aforementioned Metal Gear Solid. Multiple outings have since been released — including sequels, prequels, spin-offs, and supplementary adventures. As it stands, however, the future of the Metal Gear video game series has remained firmly up in the air.
Talk of a big-screen adaptation has circulated as far back as 2006. Things on that front took a huge leap forward in 2014, when Jordan Vogt-Roberts was first put forward as a potential director. The Kong: Skull Island helmer has since confirmed that he will oversee production, with multiple drafts of the script completed in the last few years. Repeatedly praising what's on the page, Vogt-Roberts has vowed to make "a riskier, balls-to-the-wall" film that would honor Kojima's legacy and further break the curse of video game adaptations. His words were later backed up by the release of impressive concept art that was widely well-received by hardcore Metal Gear fans.
Development on the Metal Gear Solid film took an even more substantial leap in early December — when Isaac was confirmed to be playing Solid Snake. The acclaimed actor has long been a popular choice for the role, after he himself threw his hat in the ring for consideration. Ever since the news dropped, fans have praised the decision. Equally, fan art celebrating the casting has emerged. One such piece from artist SPDRMNKYXXIII was posted on Instagram. Taking the form of an imagined poster for the film, it depicted exactly why many viewed Isaac as the perfect Solid Snake. Check it out below:
Isaac has racked up quite a resume in terms of franchises — with recent turns in everything from Star Wars to a brief, crowd-pleasing cameo in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. Solid Snake isn't even the only iconic hero that Isaac has been attached to this year. It was previously reported that he was also the front-runner to play the titular antihero in the Disney+ series, Moon Knight. That particular move would bring him officially into the box office juggernaut that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
It's not yet clear, however, which other Metal Gear character could appear and who might play them. Whatever the case, there is no denying that Isaac is already a considerable draw. The new piece of fan art has only solidified that fact — emphasizing the battle-worn intensity yet gruff charisma he could imbue the persona of Solid Snake. It's equally unknown when the film will go into official production, much less when it will be released. However, fans will no doubt will await further developments with bated breath. In the meantime, they at least have impressive pieces of art such as this to tide them over. And give them further hope for what sounds like a faithful Metal Gear Solid adaptation to come.
