There have been talks of a Metal Gear Solid movie since as early as 2006, but is it really happening? Based on the popular video game franchise created by Hideo Kojima, Metal Gear Solid has long been in talks for a movie adaptation. While those early talks stalled and the film changed hands a number of times, a 2020 announcement shows that Sony intends to go forward with the Metal Gear Solid movie adaptation.

The success of Netflix's The Witcher and the subsequent announcement of God Of War with Amazon and Horizon: 2047 with Netflix suggests a new breath of life for video game adaptations. Sony seems eager to capitalize on its intellectual property as they own the rights to Horizon Zero Dawn, Gran Turismo, God Of War, and Metal Gear Solid, all of which have plans for adaptations for streaming or film. Of those, Metal Gear Solid has been announced the longest, stalled the longest, and is the only one slated to be a film.

After over two years of waiting with little news, it isn't unreasonable to wonder whether or not a Metal Gear Solid movie will actually happen. Those anxious for the announced film may be understandably concerned about its current status. Here's everything we know about the upcoming Metal Gear Solid movie.

Is The Metal Gear Solid Movie Still Happening?

Sony's Uncharted was a box-office success, suggesting that Sony recognizes the current possibilities for video game movies in the industry. Sony hasn't backed down on Metal Gear Solid. Given its large fan base and established lore, it would be odd for Sony to decide to cut the project before it ever gets off the ground. While no release date has been announced, the Metal Gear Solid movie is by all reports still going forward and will eventually happen. The star cast as its main character has joked that the studio is "climbing through air ducts" looking for the story, suggesting that the film is still in its early planning stages.

In 2020, it was announced that Oscar Isaac would play Solid Snake in the Metal Gear Solid movie. His recent comments confirm that this status is still valid and that Isaac is still the studio's choice to portray Kojima's character. Oscar Isaac is perhaps best known for his role as Poe Dameron in the Star Wars franchise. He also notably starred in Moon Knight on Disney+, showing off some impressive acting and further proving his capacity as an action star.

Aside from merely looking right for the role — which he does — Oscar Isaac brings a wealth of acting experience to Metal Gear Solid. Bringing a certain amount of star power to the franchise, Isaac's casting has the potential to convert new viewers to the franchise. Isaac is also reportedly a fan of the game franchise and comments made during interviews suggest that he understands the character he is set to portray. With Oscar Isaac at its helm, there's every chance that the Metal Gear Solid movie could be the greatest video game movie of all time.

Metal Gear Solid has been a running franchise since 1987. Its main story features 11 games spanning nearly six decades. In total, there are 23 games included in the franchise. Because of the wealth of backstory to draw from, the Metal Gear Solid movie could potentially adapt any of its existing storylines or choose to do something entirely new. According to Oscar Isaac's remarks, the story hasn't yet been set, so it's likely that even Sony doesn't know what Metal Gear Solid will be about.
