Developer Antonio Freyre's Undetected borrows heavily from Metal Gear Solid in an effort to revive the stealth action genre that Konami has all but abandoned. The once beloved Japanese publisher recently landed in hot water after announcing an NFT auction for Castlevania's 35th anniversary, news that understandably upset franchise faithful. Metal Gear Solid also celebrates its 35th anniversary this year, yet fans of the Hideo Kojima-created brand aren't confident in Konami's ability to properly honor the IP.

The final Metal Gear helmed by Kojima hit store shelves in September 2015; it didn't get that far without growing pains, though. Tension between Kojima and Konami rose throughout the project's development and came to a head near the very end. The publisher removed the creator's name from marketing materials, for instance; Kojima left the company outright just weeks after MGSV launched. Of course, Metal Gear Solid remained in the hands of Konami, a power the publisher wielded to further capitalize on MGSV's success by producing the ill-fated Metal Gear Survive. In the absence of a true MGS experience, then, one developer took it upon themselves to pay homage to the seminal stealth series.

Antonio Freyre announced Undetected for PC via Steam late last year, promising a stealth-action revival starring a cyber-augmented agent. In the wake of Konami's poorly-received Castlevania NFT news, Freyre unleashed another gameplay trailer for Undetected, which takes several cues from classic Metal Gear Solid adventures both visually and thematically. As such, if Konami doesn't deliver on an MGS 35th anniversary celebration, fans can turn to Undetected. Freyre has yet to share release date details, but the project's Steam page says it's "coming soon." Needless to say, releasing an old-school stealth-action game during Metal Gear Solid's 35th anniversary seems a shrewd move, especially if the project in question can attract enough eyeballs. And, thus far, Undetected looks promising, from its gameplay and level design to the music and sound effects.

An overhead stealth title, the first Metal Gear launched in 1987 and is widely considered the stepping stone upon which stealth games were popularized. Nearly two dozen other MGS projects followed in its wake, a few of which focused more on action-oriented gameplay. Which direction Konami plans to take the brand in next presently remains unknown.
