Over time, video games have almost become more cinematic than stories told on the big and small screens. No gaming franchise embodies that idea more than Metal Gear Solid, which was helmed by Hideo Kojima, an avid film fan. That admiration for movies comes across in his games.

Each installment in this series features some of the most impressive cutscenes ever put into a video game. Sometimes, the player would even put down the controller for over an hour at a time to watch a cinematic sequence unfold. While most were memorable, a handful stood out above the rest as being truly epic.

The End's Death

The End using a sniper rifle in Metal Gear Solid 3

This is a tricky one to actually pull off. One of the most creative aspects of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater involved The End. The elderly sniper could be dealt with in a few ways, ranging from a lengthy boss battle to sneakily killing him long before the fight even takes place.

Another intriguing way to handle him is to save the game during the fight, advance your system's clock by a week, and return. He will have died of old age and it leads to a fun scene. Snake tells Zero that he regrets denying The End a final hunt before his corpse explodes with a whisper of "End."

Raiden Stops The Ship

In what had to be one of the series' most emotional moments, Raiden sacrifices nearly everything at a pivotal point in Metal Gear Solid IV: Guns of the Patriots. After the fight between Snake and Liquid at Shadow Moses, Snake was in position to be run down by a huge ship.

Raiden was trapped under rubble and used his sword to cut off his arm, freeing himself. Just when things looked at their most dire for Snake, the ship was stopped by Raiden holding it up with his cyborg body. Raiden shouted "Rose!" as it officially ran him over and Snake was saved.

Quiet Gets Loose

For the most part, Metal Gear Solid V was quite different from prior installments. There was less focus on cutscenes and much more open-world gameplay. Regardless, a handful of cinematics managed to blow away gamers.

One of the most notable involved Quiet, arguably the game's most memorable character besides the protagonist and antagonist. In it, she escaped captivity at Mother Base and brutally went after soldiers, including a sick scene where she breaks someone's teeth with her knife.

Big Boss Returns

Although there was a fifth game, the events of Metal Gear Solid IV truly felt like the end of the saga. That was punctuated by the post-credits scene of sorts that saw Solid Snake visit Big Boss's grave in what was a 71-minute long sequence filled with twists and turns.

Other than the return of Big Boss, he brought along with him Zero, who he explained was the mastermind behind The Patriots. Big Boss turned off Zero's life support and then passed away himself of a FOXDIE heart attack, leaving Snake alone as the series' only hero left. It was an emotional way to wrap things up.

The Torture Sequence

Revolver Ocelot Tortures Solid Snake in Metal Gear

Although the graphics from 1998's Metal Gear Solid certainly can't hold a candle to later installments, it did set the bar at the time for the franchise's cutscenes. One that players everywhere won't forget was waking up tied to a torture device.

Snake's disorientation is felt by the player as he struggles to get a grip while Ocelot and Liquid talk over their plan. This was also iconic for the revelation of the relationship between Snake and Liquid. Kojima's appreciation for action movies was clear as ever here.

Meeting Ocelot For The First Time

A young Revolver Ocelot

Revolver Ocelot is almost as synonymous with the franchise as Snake, Big Boss, or any of the heroes who gamers get to control. He was a pivotal piece of Metal Gear Solid and the sequel but with the third entry taking place in the past, it did something different.

That game featured a young Ocelot in his prime. He showed up and took out various soldiers in impressive fashion before trying to flashily kill Snake. His gun jammed and he was taken down, kickstarting a rivalry that would last decades.

Fortune Has Powers

Fortune points her gun

Fortune was a villain during Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, who was memorable for the gifts she believed she had. No bullets could hit her as they would redirect to the side. It made her almost invulnerable in battle.

However, it was eventually revealed that these abilities were given to her and not actual powers. When it looked like everyone would die, including her, Fortune stood up and managed to redirect rockets blasted at them. She actually could do these things, though it led to her losing her life.

The Truth About EVA

Metal Gear Solid 3

Throughout the games, Snake finds many allies and partners. There's a chance that the most helpful was EVA, who worked with Naked Snake during Snake Eater. At the end of the game, he had accomplished his mission and ultimately won the girl or so he thought

He woke up alone and found a tape from EVA explaining that she was actually sent by the Chinese Government to get the Philosopher's Legacy. She also revealed that The Boss wasn't a traitor and sacrificed everything for her country, changing the outlook of the whole game.

Raiden vs. Vamp

Vamp chokes Raiden

The first time that Raiden goes up against Vamp wasn't all that impressive. However, by the time the fourth game arrived, Raiden was basically a ninja and much more of an even opponent for Vamp to compete against. Their battle when Raiden showed up was incredible.

It got even better later in the game when they collided again as Snake fought off multiple geckos. Although the player has to focus on that, they can't help but check out the split-screen where Raiden and Vamp put on an epic clash that would've been perfectly in place in any blockbuster action flick.

Ocelot Gets Metal Gear Ray

Ocelot holds up a detonato

Since you get to control Solid Snake during it, most fans feel the best part of Metal Gear Solid 2 is the Tanker portion. As fun as the stealth action is, the high point is the cutscene that begins once it wraps up. As Snake snapped pictures of the new Metal Gear Ray, Ocelot and Col. Gurlukovich invaded.

Of course, Ocelot was quick to betray the colonel and steal Metal Gear Ray for himself. The double cross also came with the revelation that Liquid lived on through Ocelot's arm and could control him at times. Having it end with the possible death of Snake was the cherry on top.
