Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a concept electric vehicle it claims would run for more than 620 miles on a single charge. Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming more mainstream with every passing year, and almost all automakers are taking note. While most have multiple EVs in their portfolio, some, like Hyundai, are taking things up a notch. The South Korean automaker will reportedly soon stop developing new internal combustion engines altogether as part of its plans to transition to a full-fledged EV company going forward.

Like most other automobile manufacturers, Mercedes-Benz also has many electric vehicles in its portfolio as part of its EQ lineup. That includes the EQC compact SUV, the EQV minivan, the EQA crossover, the EQB crossover, the EQS full-size sedan, the EQA sedan, and the EQG utility vehicle. The latest concept vehicle would not only add a new member to that list, but it also promises to be one of the most capable and long-range electric vehicles in the world.

Mercedes-Benz claims that its new concept EV, the Vision EQXX, would have a chart-topping range of 620 miles (1,000 km), which would roundly beat the Tesla Model S Long Range Plus that can run around 400 miles on a single charge. In a press release this week, Mercedes-Benz claimed that the vehicle would have a very low energy consumption of "less than 10 kWh per 100 kilometers" (62 miles). If the promise does hold up, the vehicle will offer outstanding efficiency of more than six miles per kWh, which the company claims equates to a mind-numbing 235 miles per gallon or one liter per 100 kilometers.

Solar Power Would Add To Battery Efficiency

One of the notable additions to the Vision EQXX will be what Mercedes-Benz describes as "ultra-thin" solar panels on the roof, which is expected to add up to 25 km (15.5 miles) of extra range. The eco-friendliness of the car extends beyond solar panels, with the company claiming to use recycled and plant-based materials for some components. The company also says it worked with Formula 1 and Formula E engineers on the concept car and leveraged their expertise to reduce weight by cutting out excess material.

In terms of design, the Vision EQXX will ship with aluminum alloy disc brakes and magnesium alloy wheels. As for creature comforts, the car comes with a 47.5-inch mini-LED 8K screen, which is a little smaller than the huge 56-inch 'HyperScreen' of the EQS. The vehicle will also have the company's in-house voice assistant that allows users to control many smart home devices, including thermostats, home security systems, connected garage door openers, and more. There's no word on when (or if) the Vision EQXX will ever make it to the market, but it will undoubtedly be something to look forward to.
