Certain infamous WandaVision theories regarding Mephisto may not be as far-fetched as they once seemed. As the first Disney+ project in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the first entry in the Multiverse Saga, WandaVision was the subject of many rumors and theories upon its release in 2021, many of which contended that the devil Mephisto was the villain behind Wanda Maximoff's pain. While WandaVision came and went without an appearance from Mephisto, recent news about upcoming Phase 5 projects suggests that the theories about the so-called Lord of Evil may have been correct after all, forever altering the way Wanda Maximoff's Phase 4 arc will be viewed.

New MCU rumors suggest that Sacha Baron Cohen has been cast as Mephisto for the upcoming Disney+ series Ironheart and his own Special Presentation. While Marvel Studios has yet to confirm this casting, Mephisto fits perfectly into the show's reported exploration of magic and science. Moreover, even before his live-action debut, further rumors contend that Mephisto could make an appearance in multiple other Phase 5 projects, including Agatha: Coven of Chaos, starring WandaVision's Kathryn Hahn, and in his own Special Presentation for Disney+. If these rumors prove true, Mephisto may be poised to become one of the MCU's most important characters for years to come.

A Mephisto Special Presentation Can Finally Confirm Infamous WandaVision Theories

Sacha Baron Cohen as MCU Mephisto Rumors MCU Special

A Sacha Baron Cohen-led Disney+ Special Presentation could redeem the rampant Mephisto theories that stemmed from WandaVision during its run. The 2021 series delivered constant hints at a greater power behind Wanda's Westview Hex, leading many viewers to posit that Mephisto was the mastermind behind everything therein. These theories proved so prevalent that they even became a well-known meme, poking fun at just how easy it was to blame everything on Mephisto. Even after the Mephisto theories proved false in WandaVision, the character seemed unlikely to appear in any future projects. However, with Cohen's casting, the MCU can finally redeem the infamous theories that WandaVision sparked with its mysterious plot.

In a now-infamous twist, the final episodes of WandaVision proved that Agatha Harkness was the true villain, not Mephisto. While this worked in the greater context of the story, pitting Wanda against a witch with a greater personal connection to her power, Agatha's plot could easily still be linked with Mephisto. Agatha's upcoming spinoff show, which is rumored to include an appearance from Mephisto, offers the MCU a chance to retcon certain events from the character's past, perhaps revealing who she has been working for all along. If Agatha Harkness's power is indeed linked to that of Mephisto, the heavily mocked Mephisto theories from WandaVision would suddenly carry more weight.

Mephisto's Introduction Improves Wanda's Phase 4 Arc

Mephisto and Scarlet Witch

Mephisto's rumored introduction may prove beneficial in redeeming the Scarlet Witch's post-WandaVision arc in the MCU. After her villainous turn in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it seemed as though much of the development that Wanda Maximoff had undergone during the events of WandaVision had been completely overwritten. The film saw Wanda killing dozens of innocent people in order to regain the family she had given up at the end of her Disney+ series, making the emotional ending of WandaVision suddenly feel worthless. The introduction of Mephisto, however, has a unique opportunity to rewrite the Scarlet Witch's Phase 4 arc, which may prove more favorable for her character.

Multiverse of Madness revealed that Wanda has been corrupted by the Darkhold, the "Book of the Damned." Because of the dark nature of this mystical tome, it is possible that Mephisto was housed within its pages, using his power to manipulate Wanda all along, leading her to be more inclined to violence. This would go a long way in redeeming the Scarlet Witch for her horrifying acts during the events of Multiverse of Madness while also proving her great power in eventually overcoming Mephisto's influence and destroying the Darkhold forever. Proving herself more powerful than Mephisto himself, Wanda would truly become one of the most powerful beings in the MCU.

How Will Mephisto Affect Future MCU Movies And Series?

As the MCU prepares to introduce Mephisto to its ever-expanding universe, the ruler of Hell is poised to have a profound effect on upcoming movies and series in Phase 5 and Phase 6 and perhaps beyond. Most notably, Mephisto is directly linked to Ghost Rider's origin in Marvel Comics, suggesting that the Spirit of Vengeance could finally be on his way to the MCU. Moreover, the character is fair game for any other supernatural projects in the franchise, including the heavily rumored Midnight Sons team-up. With Mephisto's great power, he could even become the primary antagonist for the Midnight Sons' first team-up in the MCU.

It also bears noting that Mephisto is integral to the infamous One More Day storyline that influenced Doctor Strange's spell in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which wiped the world's memories of Peter Parker. Although Mephisto was not involved in the events of No Way Home, the MCU may make use of his character if the spell is ever undone in future films, creating a fun twist in the often-ridiculed One More Day story. As the MCU grows more cosmic in scale, Mephisto has the opportunity to make his mark on stories such as these, putting behind him the days of the wild WandaVision theories that can now actually come true.
