The upcoming Men in Black reboot starring Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson is reportedly officially titled Men in Black International. More than two decades after Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith played the coolest alien hunters on earth, the Men in Black franchise is getting a spinoff/reboot with a new lead cast.
Plot details on the new MiB movie are being kept mostly under wraps, but teasers from the production have shown stars Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson traipsing around the desert as well as donning the iconic black suits familiar from the original movie. Hemsworth and Thompson are joined in the cast by Kumail Nanjiani as a wisecracking alien sidekick, together with Emma Thompson in a reprise of her Agent O character from Men in Black 3. Rebecca Ferguson has also been added to the cast in an undisclosed role, together with Liam Neeson and Rafe Spall.
Now, the Men in Black reboot reportedly has an official title too. As reported by Collider, the movie is going by the name Men in Black International. The information came to light ahead of a Sony Pictures panel at Brazil Comic-Con where a booth has been set up revealing the title. The "international" angle to the title is in keeping with previously revealed plot details noting that the new film deals with the London branch of MiB and involves Hemsworth and Thompson's agents becoming entrenched in "a murder mystery that has them traveling the globe."
Interestingly, with the title and change of setting, Sony and director F. Gary Gray look like they're making a conscious effort to distinguish the reboot from the original movies as much as possible. Of course, the casting of Thompson as a female co-lead also puts a different spin on the original movies, which featured two men in the main roles. Premise-wise, it's hard to see how the movie can deviate much from the classic MiB action-comedy formula, though no doubt an effort will be made to expand things and perhaps bring some new minor twists to that tried-and-true formula.
Of course, the original Men in Black was a huge hit and marked a major milestone in the development of Will Smith as a movie star. Men in Black II didn't receive as much critical love as the first film, but still did well at the box office. Coming 10 years after the second film, Men in Black 3 tried to freshen things up with a time-travel gimmick, and again performed well at the box office. It will be interesting to see if Men in Black International can re-establish the franchise for Sony, and set up more sequels featuring the Hemsworth-Thompson team.
