What can you expect from a possible Men in Black 5? Men In Black: International, the fourth cinematic outing for the agents tasked with monitoring alien life forms, has finally arrived starring MCU favorites Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson will be stepping into the lead roles, taking over for franchise alums Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones.
Since the first Men in Black film premiered in 1997, the franchise has been strong yet steady. There have been three movies following that wildly successful debut: Men in Black II, Men in Black 3, and now, Men in Black: International. Over the course of the franchise, the world of the Men in Black has been expanded so rapidly, with new technology introduced, the lives of the agents explored in depth, new alien life forms discovered, and so much more. The possibility for a Men in Black 5 is ripe.
What does the future hold for the Men in Black franchise? It all rests on the success of International. Here's what we know about Men in Black 5.
Men In Black 5 Story: International Doesn't Set Up A Sequel Directly
Men in Black: International's story doesn't necessarily tee up a fifth film, with the characters in a pretty basic staus quo come the end. It would certainly be interesting to see more stories brought to life on the big screen in a Men in Black 5, but International functions as a complete, singular story. Of course, his was also the case with 1997's Men in Black and that film helped spawn the franchise, so never say never.
Men In Black 5 Depends On MIB: International's Box Office
Whether a Men in Black 5 happens really depends on how International performs: if it's profitable, Sony will surely green-light a fifth movie. Unfortunately, early reviews and box office predictions aren't promising. It has the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score in the history of the franchise and box office predictions have dropped. Even though the film's budget is estimated to be somewhere around $110 million, low for a modern tentpole, it could still bomb.
When Could Men In Black 5 Release?
If International manages to pull it out at the worldwide box office (which is a big ask at this point in time), there would still be a bit of a wait until the fifth film hit theaters. It would be at least two years before Men in Black 5 would be ready for release, and that's with production theoretically beginning from the moment the sequel was officially greenlit.
Would Chris Hemsworth & Tessa Thompson Return For MIB 5?
Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson have proven to be a game pair for a few years now, thanks to their work in the MCU on Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Endgame. It's very easy to envision a scenario where these actors come back together for another go in their MiB finest.
Things get a little murkier on the business side of things. There's no publicly-available information on whether Hemsworth and Thompson are contractually obligated to appear in a sequel or if this was a one-and-done deal, meaning their return for Men in Black 5 may depend on renegotiations.
Men In Black Could Reboot (Again)
Even if a direct sequel to International doesn't come to fruition, it could be possible that a Men in Black 5 ends up being another soft reboot or legacy-quel of sorts. The franchise has already tried both forms of sequel with International and Men in Black 3 respectively, and has shown it can come back after a decade of inactivity. Considering the likely box office struggles of Men in Black 4, it may be a smart move to bring Will Smith back. They may go quiet, but never count the MiB out.
